About The Position

This job posting is for individuals who are currently Certified Police Officers or who will graduate from a Police Academy by December 2026. The role involves providing police services to the general public, patrolling city streets to protect citizens, and enforcing city ordinances and state laws. It also includes offering a professional police presence where needed, interviewing complainants, suspects, and witnesses, and testifying in court cases. The position also focuses on community policing, serving and protecting life and property within the city limits of Grand Rapids, working with citizens to address problems, and improving police and community relations. Additionally, it involves performing tactical operations throughout the city, including special events, foot, bike, uniformed or plainclothes, and Segway patrols.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to obtain a Michigan Driver's license by date of hire.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • US citizenship.
  • Some experience involves communicating with people under varying circumstances.
  • Candidates for positions in this class are required to meet initial employment requirements as established by the Civil Service Board.
  • Must take and receive a passing score on the Grand Rapids Civil Service Exam for Police Officers.
  • Meet all State of Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards.
  • Must be Eligible for MCOLES by the Date of Hire.

Responsibilities

  • Provide police services to the general public.
