About The Position

Responsible for the operation of a two-way communications system, as well as monitors, receives, relays, records police alarms, intra-departmental calls, emergency calls, signals and other messages. Dispatches the appropriate emergency personnel and equipment to incidents and emergencies. At UMass Memorial Health, everyone is a caregiver. Requirements

  • High School diploma
  • Requires the ability to operate personal computers, report terminals, or computer-based equipment for data entry/retrieval and checking.
  • Typical applications software used: Basic use of word processing programs.
  • Requires excellent telephone communications/customer relation skills.
  • Must have the flexibility to be temporarily re-assigned to any other site in the system.
  • This position requires a high degree of accuracy and alertness in dispatching police personnel, and the dispatcher must maintain a calm demeanor and composure in responding to crisis situations.
  • Pursuant to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) CJIS Security Policy, police dispatchers are required to undergo both a Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and FBI criminal fingerprint-based background check.
  • Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • 6-12 months of related office/clerical/administrative support experience is preferred.
  • Preference will be given to those who have a minimum of one (1) year of paid or verifiable full time equivalent volunteer experience which involved working on automated equipment as a dispatcher in a police or fire department, EMS or ambulance agency.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes closed circuit television monitors and related emergency dispatch center equipment to monitor law enforcement and safety conditions. Identifies unauthorized activity or potentially problematic situations and dispatches appropriate police officers to investigate situations as appropriate.
  • Monitors fire, public safety alarms, and card access systems, and dispatches personnel to investigate problem sites as necessary.
  • Operates a two-way radio communications system to dispatch officers to calls in their area of coverage.
  • Initiates “Code Red”, “Code Pink”, or other emergency calls as required. Utilizes paging system as necessary.
  • Reports questionable or problematic conditions to supervisor, Police Sergeant, or others as appropriate.
