About The Position

VCU Police is seeking a Police Dispatcher to join our team! Dispatchers provide timely, accurate, competent and courteous communications service to the University and Hospital community who need emergency assistance and other services. We also provide communications services to Campus Police department and other governmental units in a manner that assists those agencies in carrying out their responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Designated to work when Virginia Commonwealth University is authorized to be closed due to inclement weather or other emergency closings.
  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent experience.
  • Possession of DCJS Basic Dispatch Certification and VCIN Full Access Certification or ability to complete within 12 months of hire.
  • Valid DMV operator license.
  • Must never have been convicted of a felony or crime of moral turpitude.
  • Ability to perform emergency dispatch support work with accuracy, speed and minimal supervision; demonstrated ability to read and interpret agency policies, procedures, and regulations, to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse populations, to work in a team environment with all levels of local, state, federal, university and private sector.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions; to read maps and interpret information, route multiple incoming emergency calls and make decisions to successfully coordinate multiple functions for multiple agencies.
  • Ability to analyze data in order to make decisions and maintain situational awareness across the Commonwealth.
  • Ability to operate complex technological systems such as the Common Operating Picture and Crisis Management System.
  • Ability to work in a 24-hour operation, 7-day rotating schedule is required.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, may be assigned mandatory overtime up to 12 hours.
  • Must be able to function physically and mentally under extreme stress and during emergency situations.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
