The Police Cadet Program is a civilian position exempt from Civil Service status, with a program length ranging from a minimum of one year to a maximum of five years. Cadets work a minimum of thirty (30) to forty (40) hours per week. Upon reaching twenty-one (21) years of age, a Cadet may be certified as a Police Officer if they have served a minimum of one year as a Cadet/Apprentice, passed the physical performance test, met minimum training requirements, and been certified by the Civil Service Merit Board. After becoming a Police Officer, a one-year probationary period begins. Cadets choosing the optional college education program will work a minimum of thirty (30) hours per week, while those not participating will work approximately forty (40) hours per week.
