About The Position

The Poison Information Pharmacist Specialist provides real-time clinical consultation and guidance for toxic exposures and medication-related emergencies through the Oklahoma Poison Center. This position supports the poison center’s highest call-volume consultation hours and plays a key role in patient safety, public health education, and experiential training of pharmacy students. This role offers a unique opportunity to develop advanced clinical expertise in toxicology practice while working within a collaborative academic environment. Following approved management protocols, answers incoming calls to the poison center hotline regarding toxic exposures, medication errors, adverse drug events, and related emergencies. Provides timely assessment, triage, and management recommendations. Obtains detailed exposure histories and evaluates toxicity severity through clinical judgment and interpretation of toxicology information. Assesses patients across the lifespan including infants, children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. Utilizes toxicology information resources including computerized databases, reference texts, and consultation with clinical and medical toxicologists to support clinical decision-making. Provides crisis intervention support when appropriate and refers callers to community resources as needed. Performs follow-up monitoring of active exposure cases and communicates patient status updates and treatment recommendations to healthcare providers and facilities. Documents all encounters accurately and performs data entry in accordance with poison center standards. Assists with case review activities and participates in quality assurance processes. Assists in development of poison prevention education materials and supports dissemination of public health information. Precepts and supervises pharmacy students working in the poison center environment. Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the functions of the position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy or PharmD
  • Licensed Pharmacist by the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy or obtain licensure within 90 days of hire date
  • Oklahoma Preceptor License by the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy or obtain within 12 months of hire date.
  • Knowledge of pharmacotherapy and toxicology principles relevant to management of acute exposures and medication-related events
  • Basic computer skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to rapidly synthesize clinical information and provide evidence-based recommendations
  • Strong verbal communication skills for high-acuity telephone consultation
  • Ability to manage multiple active cases and competing priorities
  • Attention to detail in documentation and data entry
  • Ability to effectively teach and precept pharmacy students in a clinical practice setting
  • Demonstrated initiative and problem-solving ability

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of Specialist in Poison Information (SPI) training and pursue CSPI certification after 2,000 documented human exposure calls.
  • Residency training or experience in hospital, emergency medicine, critical care, ambulatory care, or poison center practice
  • Prior experience providing telephone-based clinical consultation
  • Interest in toxicology practice, poison prevention, or public health initiatives
  • Interest in participating in clinical projects, quality improvement initiatives, or toxicology-related research
  • PGY-1 residency training or equivalent clinical practice experience
  • Experience in hospital pharmacy, emergency medicine, ambulatory care, or poison center practice
  • Experience providing clinical recommendations to healthcare professionals or the public
  • Experience precepting pharmacy students or other learners
