About The Position

The Technical Specialist is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the point of care testing performed at multiple sites both internal and external to the hospital. These responsibilities include proficiency testing, handling any procedural or technical problems that may occur, and taking measures to keep the point of care testing in compliance with regulatory agencies.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Biological Sciences
  • 5+ years in a hospital with at least 200+ beds and suitably related service of equal tasks, tests, and volumes in a CAP certified laboratory
  • Applicants must be a registered Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist via ASCP, NCA, or AMT.
  • Must have current BLS certification or acquire within 3 months

Nice To Haves

  • B.S. in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science.
  • An associate’s degree in medical laboratory technology or MLT with more than 5 years’ experience in point of care may also be acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain laboratory procedures and protocols
  • Ensure accurate information is provided for diagnosis and treatment of diseases
  • Provide continuous methods for identifying systematic problems inherent in area(s) of responsibility
  • Ensure compliance with all accreditation agencies and the associated proficiency testing
  • Train and supervise all new hires from nursing and educators performing testing in area of responsibility
  • Act as a resource for all lab testing in area(s) of responsibility
  • Maintain QC and QA standards and follow-up variances
  • Attain and maintain standards of accreditation in accordance with CAP, CLIA, AABB (Transfusion Services only), and HFAP
  • Evaluate new reagent tests and/or methodologies regularly
  • Write and implement new/revised procedures and procedure manuals
  • Provide general lab orientation to new Lab hires regarding departmental policies and procedures
  • Perform the initial comparison studies, QC, linearity testing, and correlation for analytes and instrumentation in areas of responsibility
  • Serve as a CAP Inspector of assigned areas
  • Maintain and care for all equipment and supplies, including purchasing new supplies to maintain adequate inventory levels and storing extra materials in the proper manner
  • Maintain the department records (patient or other), reporting and filing as required
  • Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services
  • Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care
  • Represent the Lab at meetings as applicable to point-of-care testing
  • Meet with vendors to evaluate and recommend testing products
