The Point of Care Coordinator is responsible for the coordination of activities related to point-of-care testing (POCT), including writing procedures, training testing staff, ensuring regulatory compliance and troubleshooting POCT instruments. This role supervises and administers the Hospital’s Point of Care Testing Program and department Quality Management programs under the direction of the department administrative and medical directors and clinical lab managers to meet patient care and regulatory agency requirements. The coordinator works with department leaders to implement new programs, monitor performance, collect and evaluate performance data, develop corrective action plans, and assist in the training and education of personnel regarding Point-of-Care testing and Quality activities. They also perform technical duties within the department as required and support the department in achieving goals for service, quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, patient satisfaction, healthy work environment, and integration of intra and inter-departmental activities. The position ensures hospital staff are familiar with the analytical procedures, maintenance and troubleshooting of POCT equipment by designing training and competency assessment programs, collects and evaluates quality data from POCT sites, and reports this data to the laboratory director, updating Quality dashboards as required. They resolve technical problems, ensure remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications, and ensure all required quality control activities are performed and documented. The role identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results, documents all corrective actions, and escalates issues promptly and effectively. Additionally, the coordinator ensures all required instrument maintenance and calibration activities are performed and documented, performs periodic audits to ensure regulatory compliance, assesses records for proficiency testing samples, and directs training, orientation, and competency documentation for all staff involved with POCT. They validate new methods and instrumentation and work collaboratively with clinical educators and clinical leaders to ensure an effective and high-quality POCT Program, attending meetings and conferences as required. Other related duties are also part of this role.
