About The Position

Under the direction of the Plumbing and HVAC Supervisor, this role assists with the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing fixtures and systems safely, efficiently, and accurately. The position also involves maintaining professional growth by learning the plumbing trade through on-the-job experiences. Employees in this role also function as part-time Vocational Instructors for youth, providing a positive work experience that emphasizes the development of good work ethic and vocational skills. The William George Agency for Children's Services is a private not-for-profit residential treatment center serving youth aged 12-21 with significant mental health issues, behavioral difficulties, and substance abuse issues.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (copy required upon hire)
  • Mechanical ability and willingness to learn the Plumbing trade through comprehensive on-the-job training
  • Must be able to work well with others and take direction to accomplish job tasks
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment
  • Yearly Physical (required within 1 month of hire)
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License (copy required upon hire)

  • Must successfully complete all required background checks: NYS Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR), Multi-State Sex Offender Registry (SOR), NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) fingerprinting, NYS Justice Center Staff Exclusion List (SEL), NYS OMIG Medicaid Exclusion List, Out-of-state child abuse register inquiry of any state in which the person resided within the last five years (if applicable), NYS License Event Notification Service (LENS), Office of Inspector General (OIG).
  • Must successfully complete Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI)

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the maintenance, repairs, and installation of various types of plumbing fixtures such as urinals, toilets, basins, floor drains, sinks, showers, drinking fountains, and laboratory and medical equipment.
  • Assist with the maintenance, repairs, and installation of various types of plumbing systems, including sanitary, storm, chemical waste lines and vents, sanitary and storm sewers, gas, and water systems (hot, cold, soft, and water filtration).
  • Assist with the maintenance, repairs, and installation of appliances and equipment, including air compressors, boilers, hot water heaters, softeners, stills, water filtration units, pipes, pumps, kitchen equipment, washers, and dryers.
  • Assist with skilled plumbing constructions, remodels, and repairs according to established trade standards and applicable building, plumbing, and safety codes.
  • Assist with monitoring and troubleshooting plumbing breakdowns by diagnosing trouble and repairing, replacing, or taking other corrective actions.
  • Properly use equipment, materials, and tools in a safe and professional manner.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Assess the youth’s interests and knowledge of the Vocational Program specific to your trade area.
  • Instruct youth in a skilled trade to prepare them for employment upon discharge.
  • Plan and conduct on-the-job training activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides youth with opportunities to observe, question, and participate in.
  • Instruct youth in the proper and safe care of work areas and all applicable equipment; stress safety at all times.
  • Be prepared and in a position to begin work following the Vocational Program time schedules; ensure that assigned youth are properly supervised at all times and maintain attendance and work schedule records.
  • Enforce established dress, conduct, and behavior codes appropriate to the Vocational Program area.
  • Communicate and document significant behaviors or incidents on behalf of youth.
  • Maintain all trade-related, Vocational Program, and youth records and paperwork in a timely, organized way.
  • Adhere to and perform all duties following all rules, regulations, policies, and safety standards of The William George Agency and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services while upholding the mission, vision, and values.
