About The Position

The Plumber Apprentice position is a full-time, paid opportunity for individuals to gain skills in plumbing installation, maintenance, and repair. Apprentices will receive hands-on, on-the-job training in plumbing systems, piping, fixtures, welding, and related equipment, supplemented by related classroom instruction through GCA Trades Academy. The Plumber Apprentice role involves assisting with the installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of plumbing and piping systems across various project sites. This position places a strong emphasis on following safety requirements, reading blueprints and specifications, using hand and power tools, and working effectively as part of a team.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States.
• Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
• Must have resided in Guam for a minimum of three (3) consecutive years prior to entry into the program. A Mayor’s Verification of Residency is required upon hire.
• Must be able to attend a minimum of two (2) classes per week, as specified by the apprenticeship program standards, while maintaining a full-time (40-hour) work schedule with PFM.

Responsibilities

• Install plumbing and piping systems – Install underground storm, sanitary, water, and other piping systems.
• Assemble pipes and fittings – Assemble tubing, fittings, couplings, clamps, and other components using appropriate materials and tools.
• Install plumbing fixtures and equipment – Install pipes, valves, appliances, water heaters, sinks, toilets, and similar fixtures.
• Install and secure pipe supports – Anchor and attach pipes to walls, ceilings, structures, and fixtures using brackets, clamps, hangers, and supports.
• Cut, thread, bend, and prepare pipes – Prepare pipes to specifications using saws, cutting tools, pipe threaders, and pipe benders.
• Weld and fabricate piping components – Weld metal components and perform specialized welding or fabrication of piping systems.
• Measure and lay out plumbing work – Measure, mark, and determine the locations of pipes, connections, fixtures, and openings using levels and other measuring tools.
• Read blueprints and specifications – Review drawings, building codes, and specifications to determine installation and repair requirements.
• Plan plumbing installations and repairs – Plan the layout and sequence of plumbing installation, construction, or repair work.
• Inspect and test plumbing systems – Conduct pressure, hydrostatic, water, or air tests to identify leaks and verify system performance.
• Maintain and repair plumbing systems – Repair or replace damaged components, washers, pipes, fittings, and other plumbing parts and clear clogged drains.
• Operate and maintain plumbing equipment – Modify, clean, maintain, and operate pipe systems, equipment, fittings, and related machinery using hand and power tools.
• Inspect work areas for safety and repair needs – Identify obstructions, structural issues, environmental conditions, and potential safety hazards before and during work.
• Install water- and energy-efficient systems – Install green plumbing equipment and fixtures such as flow restrictors, dual-flush toilets, pressure-assisted toilets, and tankless water heaters.
• Document work and coordinate personnel – Maintain work-assignment records and assist/direct helpers involved in pipe cutting, preassembly, and plumbing installation.
