About The Position

The Platform Engineer provides technical leadership for Wellmark’s internal developer platform initiatives, including software catalogs, platform integrations, self-service experiences, and improvements to developer workflows. The role consults with Wellmark leaders on platform capabilities, engineering delivery challenges, process improvements, and technology enhancements, and contributes to the platform’s direction and evolution. The position leads technical designs for complex, highly integrated application platforms, with attention to security, information reuse, integration, performance, availability, and alignment with architecture standards. It collaborates with solution architects, project teams, technical teams, business stakeholders, and other partners to design solutions and improve processes. The role also supports architecture governance, provides technical guidance and mentorship, and recommends industry practices and emerging technologies.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or direct and applicable work experience.
At least 7 years of experience, including development, innovative solutions, infrastructure, architecture design, and operations.
At least 4 years of experience in IT infrastructure, architecture design, and operations.
Informal leadership, coaching, and mentoring skills.
Architecture design experience.
Stakeholder consulting and problem-solving skills.
Strong communication skills.

Nice To Haves

Experience working in Agile product delivery or software engineering environments.
Experience building or supporting internal developer platforms, developer portals, and self-service engineering capabilities.
Experience developing internal developer platform integrations, automation, and self-service capabilities using AWS services, APIs, SDKs, and infrastructure as code.
Experience integrating internal developer platforms with source control, cloud platforms, CI/CD systems, security tooling, documentation, observability solutions, service management systems, and enterprise data sources.
Experience designing software catalogs, scorecards, health checks, or similar platform capabilities.
Experience developing self-service workflows, templates, automation, documentation, and onboarding capabilities that improve developer productivity and platform adoption.
Experience identifying developer friction and driving measurable improvements across developer journeys, tools, processes, platforms, and teams.
Experience using platform health, adoption, usage, reliability, or developer productivity measures to identify opportunities and evaluate outcomes.
Experience operating and continuously improving an internal engineering platform, including monitoring, troubleshooting, documentation, and service ownership.
Experience applying product management principles to internal engineering platforms, including gathering developer feedback, prioritizing capabilities, and measuring platform adoption, effectiveness, and alignment with engineering standards.

Responsibilities

Advise Wellmark leaders on platform capabilities, engineering delivery challenges, process improvements, and technology enhancements.
Contribute technical leadership and direction to internal developer platform initiatives, including software catalogs, integrations, self-service experiences, and developer workflow improvements.
Lead technical designs for complex, highly integrated application platforms, optimizing security, information leverage and reuse, integration, performance, and availability while ensuring alignment with architecture standards.
Consult with solution architects and project teams to create and document design deliverables and collaborate on effective technology solutions.
Plan, develop, and estimate technical solutions as needed, collaborating with other technical teams.
Collaborate with the lead architect, business systems analyst, and stakeholders on process improvements.
Consult with business stakeholders on technical planning to ensure architectures align with business expectations.
Review and provide technical guidance on supported solutions, including vendor evaluations and integrations.
Support architecture governance standards and provide guidance on IT policies, security, and infrastructure.
Provide training, coaching, and mentorship on technical design and solution implementation.
Build business relationships to ensure technical designs align with business needs.
Develop and apply industry best practices and recommend emerging technologies.
Operate and continuously improve internal engineering platforms, including monitoring, troubleshooting, documentation, and service ownership.
Use platform health, adoption, usage, reliability, or developer productivity measures to identify opportunities and evaluate outcomes.
