About The Position

The Plant Utility position at Special Metals Corporation New Hartford Division involves a variety of tasks focused on preparing and maintaining mill products and the work environment. Responsibilities include using grinding equipment to remove surface defects from various metal products like ingots, electrodes, and billets, and preparing them for further processing. The role also entails operating overhead cranes for loading and unloading machinery, transporting and weighing materials, and managing scrap and trash. Additionally, the Plant Utility worker will operate grit blasting equipment to clean surfaces, use a pneumatic chipping hammer to remove cans from billets, and perform minor maintenance and repair tasks, including assisting with equipment installation and dismantling. Maintaining a clean and orderly work area is a key aspect of the job.

Requirements

  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds
  • Must be able to push/pull 20 lbs.
  • Must be able to bend and squat at least 10 times per hour

Responsibilities

  • Utilize pneumatic grinder to remove surface defects and prepare various intermediate mill products for additional processing.
  • Utilize grinder to remove material from ingots, electrodes, and billets.
  • Move and/or weigh and locate material and equipment.
  • Operate overhead cranes to load and unload machinery.
  • Transport and weigh material.
  • Transport scrap, and trash, etc.
  • Keep assigned areas in a clean, orderly condition.
  • Operate grit blaster equipment to clean surfaces of various sizes bar, billet, and ingot material.
  • Operate pneumatic chipping hammer to remove cans from billets.
  • Add oil to reservoirs.
  • Perform general work involving minor maintenance and repair.
  • Assist in the installation and dismantling of equipment.
  • Operate spot grinder.
  • Operate cutting torch.
  • Maintain necessary production records.
  • Change grinding wheel as required.
  • Make minor adjustments and repairs to spot grinder and clamping device.
  • Grind and inspect material removing defects as directed.
  • Keep work area clean.
  • Assist Maintenance Repairers in general assembly and disassembly work.
  • Perform minor or non-skilled maintenance work without close direction.
  • Use proper equipment to break up foundations and dig holes.
  • Patch and repair floors.
  • Fabricate laminations and liners by cutting out and gluing to proper form.
  • Perform simple assembly type work consisting of putting together prefabricated materials.
  • Operate mower and small vehicular equipment.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on mower and small vehicular equipment utilized in performance of yard work.
  • Store and transfer material as directed between work site and storage area, using hand truck, fork truck, etc.
  • Mow and rake lawn, trim shrubbery, spread fertilizer, plant grass, trees, shrubbery, care for grounds, etc.
  • Clean pits, tanks, and water towers, roofs, walkways and accessways, dust collection systems, nozzles, air and dust filters, as well as replacing these filters when necessary.
  • Carry oil and grease from oil house to each piece of equipment that requires lubrication.
  • Maintain oil house in a neat orderly manner.
  • Maintain proper oil and grease inventory.
  • Use overhead crane or jib crane to transport material from storage area to work area.
  • Use chipping hammer to remove cans.
  • Operate forklift trucks, and yard trucks.
  • Select proper grit in accordance with established procedures or instructions for surface and quality requirements of materials, and loads and unloads grit as required.
  • Utilize proper machine settings to grit blast various products.
  • Wear protective clothing and equipment as required.
  • Perform miscellaneous jobs such as banding material, painting, charging light bulbs, etc.
  • Move and weigh material as necessary in plant.
  • Clear areas and clean or re-locate material and equipment as directed.
  • Grind defects from ingots, electrodes, slabs, and billets.
  • Spot dye check defect areas to determine if defect is removed.
  • Change and dress grinding wheels, and is responsible for equipment and shielding.
  • Grind various intermediate cogging/finishing mill products to remove surface defects such as tears, laps and seams, using pneumatic grinders.
  • Use dye penetrant systems to determine if all defects are removed and re-grind as necessary.
  • Remove cans from material using hammer and wedge.
  • Maintain identity of all material in work area.
  • Keep machines utilized clean.
  • Utilize a torch to cut slots into electrodes for VAR melting.
