About The Position

Designated Essential Employee covering the 24/7 operation of campus utilities, where the employee will operate, inspect, and maintain primary and auxiliary equipment and systems at the Central Energy Plant and West Campus Energy Plant to provide heating and cooling needs to campus buildings. This position has been deemed essential as addressed in the University of Wyoming’s Employee Handbook. Employees in essential positions may be required to work during emergency closures and winter closures based on the nature of their job duties and the reasons for the closure. This essential position is in the UW Central Energy Plant which is manned 24/7. Employees must work varying shifts on a rotating basis; shifts rotate every 28 days and are as follows: 7AM-3PM, 3PM-11PM, 11PM-7AM.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2 years work-related experience in an industrial mechanical setting, preferably in the steam or chilled water fields
  • Respirator qualification within one month of hire.
  • Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the Driving for University Business SAP.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of appropriate vocational schooling, or two years of boiler operator experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to be a productive team member.

Responsibilities

  • Operate multi-fuel, high pressure, high temperature boilers, liquid centrifugal chiller units, and other equipment in the Central Energy Plant.
  • Operate and remotely monitor natural gas condensing boilers and Thermal Energy Storage Tank equipment at the West Campus Energy Plant.
  • Train less experienced operators in the operation and maintenance of boilers and chillers under normal and emergency conditions.
  • Conduct required water and pollution control tests to maintain plant, equipment and state standards.
  • Monitor gauges and equipment; record data noting problems with equipment or system conditions. Take necessary corrective action when needed.
  • Confer with other operators regarding current operation information and problems.
  • Perform scheduled and emergency maintenance and repairs.
  • Restore plant functions to normal, following shut downs or power failures.
  • Receive and relay information to proper personnel on after-hour calls.
  • Monitor and record coal shipment for quality control.
  • Operate and test backup electrical generation systems.
  • Maintain designated area in a clean and safe operating condition.
  • Other duties as assigned.
