About The Position

This position is responsible for overseeing all operations at the Alyeska Seafoods processing facility, including day to day production operations, scheduling of fishing vessels, crew schedules, production priorities, and coordination of machinery maintenance and repairs. This position will coordinate and work closely with the Assistant Plant Manager, and the Environmental Compliance Manager in coordinating raw material acquisition, delivery and production schedules, product assessment, QC grading standards, shipment of finished product, and compliance with State and Federal environmental regulations and relevant permit conditions. This position is also responsible for the overall supervision of the Housing/Galley, Engineering, and Office Departments, insuring the managers of those departments efficiently and effectively manage their departments and supervise their respective staff. The Plant Manager is responsible for the overall management, direction and supervision of the Production Office, Galley & Housing, Engineering, Safety, Security, and Fishmeal/Collagen departments and their respective managers.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing all operations at the Alyeska Seafoods processing facility.
  • Managing day to day production operations.
  • Scheduling of fishing vessels.
  • Managing crew schedules.
  • Setting production priorities.
  • Coordinating machinery maintenance and repairs.
  • Coordinating raw material acquisition, delivery and production schedules, product assessment, QC grading standards, shipment of finished product, and compliance with State and Federal environmental regulations and relevant permit conditions with the Assistant Plant Manager and Environmental Compliance Manager.
  • Overall supervision of the Housing/Galley, Engineering, and Office Departments, ensuring the managers of those departments efficiently and effectively manage their departments and supervise their respective staff.
  • Overall management, direction and supervision of the Production Office, Galley & Housing, Engineering, Safety, Security, and Fishmeal/Collagen departments and their respective managers.
  • Working closely with the VP of Operations and Chief Engineer to review and evaluate overall project budget and cost control including ROI on Capital Spending.
  • Responsible directly or through the management of relevant department managers for the safe and efficient day-to-day operations of the plant, related support operations, recruitment of fishing vessels, and the maintenance of working relations with such vessels.
  • Responsible for the regular review of Fishing Vessel accounts for excessively aged receivables or other vessel account problems, including requests for advances, crew draws, fishing vessel purchase orders, etc.
  • Ensuring that regular or daily (as needed) radio/telephone/personal contacts are maintained with Fishing Vessels for scheduling and the maintenance of business relations.
  • Remaining informed, consistent with applicable law and WSI's anti-trust policies, of trends in ex-vessel prices.
  • Coordinating with the President, Executive Vice-President of Sales, and the Vice-President of Operations in the establishment of competitive raw fish prices.
  • Ensuring directly or through the management of appropriate department managers that adequate production supplies and materials, parts, galley/housing, and other relevant materials have been ordered and received in a timely manner.
  • Working closely with the V.P. of Operations and Dep. Plant Manager to ensure the smooth daily operation of the Production Departments, including in particular, vessel rotations, fish age, product assessment, QC grading, and shipment of finished product.
  • Responsible for determining security needs, including those required by the Homeland Security Department, and maintaining staffing levels to meet those needs.
  • Ensuring that the Safety Department is maintaining policies and procedures for all areas of the plant and that the plant complies with all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Working closely with the H/R Director to insure that all departments are complying with state and federal employment laws.
  • Coordinating with the Environmental Compliance Manager to insure compliance with all applicable State and Federal environmental regulations and relevant permit conditions.
  • Directly supervising Department Managers and any other direct reports.
  • Interviewing and making hiring decisions, in consultation with the H/R Department concerning such direct reports.
  • Evaluating and otherwise directing the work performance of Department Managers.
  • Counseling and disciplining Department Managers and other key staff, when necessary, in consultation with the H/R Departments.
  • Having authority, in consultation with the H/R Department, to make changes in personnel status, like transfers, demotions, promotions and terminations.
  • Reviewing other promotions and terminations.
  • Assisting department managers to determine upcoming staffing requirements.
  • Indirectly reviewing hiring to ensure consistent with staffing requirements.
  • Responsible for periodic review of staffing levels, and for taking appropriate action to increase efficiency of the plant.
  • Informing the Office Manager of layoff dates and projected staffing levels for the following seasons within a reasonable time frame to ensure dates and flights are available.
  • Reviewing with the Office Manager, and in most instances the H/R Director, incidents, concerns or complaints that are raised by employees or H/R.
  • Reviewing recommended actions from H/R and making final decision for action within the boundaries of state and federal laws and WSI’s internal policies.
  • Responsible for overall supervision of the Office Department, including the timely submittals of all fishing logs and fish tickets to local, state and federal agencies.
  • Responsible for overall supervision of the Engineering Department, coordinating with the Chief Engineer for repairs and maintenance of machinery and buildings.
  • Creating a yearly budget for plant expenditures.
  • Working with the Chief Engineer and Vice-President of Operations to create the yearly capital improvements budget.
  • Reviewing all monthly departmental budgets and making recommendations to maintain budget goals (once approved by the Board of Directors).
  • Striving to maintain positive relationships in the City of Unalaska/Port of Dutch Harbor to benefit WSI's public relations.
