About The Position

This is structure and craft work involving the operation of a high-pressure steam plant as well commercial HVAC equipment, building management systems; the maintenance and repair of boilers, water, heating, and the installation and maintenance of pumps; motors. Work is performed under limited supervision.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of heating plant operations and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical and building trades.
  • Knowledge of various mechanical systems. Steam plant, HVAC systems etc.
  • Ability to use of a variety of power and hand tools.
  • Ability to read plans and to work from sketches and specifications.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and direct the work of journeymen, semi-skilled, and unskilled workers.
  • Ability to keep records and make reports.
  • Four (4) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of steam generating plants and maintenance and repair of water, heating and electrical systems in a large commercial or public plant.
  • Possession of an engineer's license of the class required by the State of Maine for the equipment to be operated.
  • Valid state of Maine driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in residential or commercial HVAC preferred.
  • Candidates with a boiler license or High-Pressure Steam engineer license will be considered
  • Experience in Geothermal, Solar a plus.
  • Journeyman Fuel Oil license or Natural gas/Propane gas tech license and or Universal Refrigeration license or a Plumbers license.
  • The ability to gain a Boiler Operators license within 6 months.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors and directs the operation and maintenance of a central heating plant, or a number of low-pressure plants used in heating individual buildings in order to heat facilities effectively and economically.
  • Monitors and maintains HVAC equipment including air handlers, VAVs, Circulator pumps, Chiller systems etc.
  • Performs the more skilled and complex maintenance jobs in order to ensure heating plant operates correctly and work is properly done.
  • Coordinates their daily maintenance and service with agency facility managers.
  • Keeps related records and prepares reports in order to document activities and provide information for administrative review and planning purposes.
  • Requisitions supplies and materials needed in the operation and maintenance of the plant and mechanical department in order to ensure availability of needed items.
