About The Position

Under general guidance and direction of the Building Official, performs complex technical duties in the enforcement of construction codes through the review and approval of construction plans and blueprints interpretation to ensure public safety and health. Inspects and enforces compliance of applicable building codes and regulations for the building of structures in Morgan County.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years college or university with an emphasis on architecture, engineering, drafting, or a closely related field or a graduate of a recognized Building Inspection Technology or Building Codes Training program.
  • 1-2 years of experience in areas related to the duties listed above
  • Considerable knowledge of state and local building codes and ordinances
  • Considerable knowledge of mathematics and its application to construction inspection, and engineering computations
  • Working knowledge of the standard practices of architecture and construction work
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of effective public relations
  • Correct English usage, spelling, and grammar.
  • Ability to read and accurately interpret engineering plans and building construction plans and specifications
  • Ability to professionally furnish and obtain information from other departments and organizations
  • Requires constant contact with the public presenting data that may influence important decisions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, building contractors, engineers, architects, and the general public
  • Communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Applicant must be able to take and pass the building inspector certification test within 6 months of being hired.
  • Must possess a valid Utah State driver's license or have the ability to obtain one prior to employment and have a good driving record
  • Must be physically capable of moving about on construction work site.

Responsibilities

  • Examines and approves all building plans for construction within the County to ensure compliance with plumbing, mechanical, electrical and general building codes.
  • Reviews building plans with inspectors to familiarize inspectors with specific projects.
  • Reviews specifications and structural calculations for building plans.
  • Review contractor licenses.
  • Answers questions of other county departments regarding the Building Code.
  • Reviews contractor and home-owner problems and approves solutions.
  • Reviews and approve changes to plans.
  • Inspects buildings under construction for compliance with appropriate codes.
  • Interprets building codes as applicable within guidelines established by the Building Official.
  • Receive and ensure that complaints are properly investigated and solved.
  • Write reports, memos, and keep records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
