About The Position

The City of Vineyard is seeking a motivated, customer-focused professional to join our Community Development team as a Planning Technician. This unique position combines front-counter customer service and administrative support with meaningful planning responsibilities, making it an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build a career in urban planning, land use, development review, or local government. The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, comfortable working with the public, and interested in learning the planning and development process. This position offers hands-on experience with development applications, public meetings, GIS mapping, planning research, and community development projects.

Requirements

  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret site plans, subdivision plats, zoning maps, and development documents.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Familiarity with GIS software.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to explain technical information clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the public, developers, consultants, elected officials, and other agencies.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Public Administration, Environmental Studies, Political Science, Development Studies, or a related field; or Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for residents, developers, contractors, architects, engineers, and business owners.
  • Answer questions regarding zoning, development applications, permits, and planning processes.
  • Receive, review, and process land use and development applications.
  • Calculate and collect application and permit fees.
  • Maintain accurate electronic and physical planning records.
  • Assist with the review and processing of site plans, subdivisions, plat amendments, conditional use permits, development agreements, signage permits, and other planning applications.
  • Conduct research and gather information for planning studies, reports, and special projects.
  • Assist with the preparation of staff reports, maps, graphics, and presentation materials.
  • Support updates to city ordinances, development regulations, and planning documents.
  • Assist with GIS mapping, data collection, and spatial analysis projects.
  • Prepare agendas, packets, notices, and meeting materials for the Planning Commission, Hearing Officer, Development Review Committee, Active Transportation Commission, and other boards as assigned.
  • Attend meetings, take minutes, and provide administrative support.
  • Coordinate public hearing notices and ensure compliance with legal notification requirements.
  • Maintain departmental calendars and track project deadlines.
