About The Position

Dudek’s Planning & Urban Design studio is a boutique service at Dudek, but it is combined with the breadth and depth of capabilities characteristic of the larger Dudek firm. We are a team of nimble problem solvers, innovative thinkers, and collaborators that tackle some of the most pressing issues being faced by our cities, regions, and state. Our Planning and Urban Design team is seeking an intern to support a full range of the group’s projects, including research and writing, creating maps, infographics, illustrations, developing project branding, presentations, staffing outreach events, and supporting fabrication of outreach materials. A successful candidate is collaborative, interested in solving issues faced by our cities, and enjoys working on a wide range of projects. They will have strong graphic design/visual communication skills with the ability to translate dense planning topics and concepts into eye-catching and easy-to understand graphics and stories. Interns should be available to work up to 40 hours per week as determined by intern availability and company workload. This is a paid internship at $27/hr.

Requirements

  • Recently completed or currently pursuing a Master’s Degree from an Urban Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or other related degree program. Students from Graphic/Industrial Design program with a strong interest or academic training in urban planning will also be considered.
  • Proficiency or knowledge in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Ability to collaboratively work in a team setting.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Passionate about planning, urban design, and cities.
  • Experience participating in virtual and in person community engagement events.
  • Proficiency in other programs such as GIS, SketchUp, Rhino, and CAD is a plus.
  • Fluency in Spanish or other languages is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of visioning and planning documents.
  • Assist in the preparation of graphics and maps using the Adobe Suite and ArcGIS.
  • Collect and interpret demographic and public outreach data.
  • Conduct site visits, background research, stakeholder outreach, surveys, and interviews.
  • Assist in the coordination and facilitation of varying public outreach events, including presentation of concepts and materials and support the physical fabrication of simple artistic installations.
  • Research applicable State laws, funding opportunities, and local ordinances.
  • Travel within the Southern California region (twice a month on average).
