About The Position

HWC is seeking a Planner to assist Indiana and Kentucky communities in preparing and implementing long-range community and economic development strategies. As a key member of our New Albany planning team, this role will be responsible for facilitating active community participation in planning work, communicating planning policies to the public, and preparing action plans that will lead to results. HWC delivers plans through a multi-disciplinary team of professionals so that our plans are visionary, technically sound and market driven. Our planning studio consists of planners, landscape architects, engineers, and economic development professionals. Each brings unique perspective and skills and has led to HWC’s reputation for leading plans that get results. Services provided include comprehensive plans, economic development plans, park and recreation plans, thoroughfare plans, downtown plans, district plans, corridor plans and regional plans.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in planning, urban design, public policy, landscape architecture or a related field.
  • 2+ years of professional experience in long range planning.
  • Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience with ArcGIS.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Ability to think critically, manage time and solve problems.
  • Strong data analysis and organizational skills.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Complete competence working well independently and on a team.
  • Applicants must possess high ethical standards, have a strong sense of commitment to self-development, teamwork, and a desire to work in a deadline-driven team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Complete background research, analysis, and GIS mapping to support project planning.
  • Facilitate public participation activities to identify issues, opportunities, and priorities.
  • Collaborate to recommend strategies to address needs and promote economic and community development.
  • Travel to and participate in public workshops and steering committee meetings across Indiana and Kentucky, including evening meetings.
  • Prepare interim and final planning documents including writing, mapping, and graphic design.
  • Interact effectively with others including community leaders, residents, stakeholders, elected officials, consulting firms partnering with HWC, state agencies, and HWC staff.
