About The Position

Catawba County is experiencing new growth and renewed interest in redevelopment, and the Planning Department is looking for a motivated teammate to join their department. In this versatile position, you will assist in the administration of a wide variety of land use activities in both current and long-range planning. You will have the opportunity to work with citizens and land development professionals on current planning projects, and share in responsibilities for special and long-range projects.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Planning, Geography, Public Administration, or related field; OR Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Geography, Public Administration, or related field and 1 year of Planning experience
  • A valid Driver’s license and a safe driving record
  • Clear, concise, and accurate verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal staff, outside agencies, and the general public
  • Self-organized and the ability to logically process and plan tasks/projects accordingly
  • Ability to interpret and analyze technical and statistical information
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Capability to work with minimal supervision
  • Strong independent judgement and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong computer and technical skills and experience, including Microsoft Office Suite and GIS systems
  • Solid working knowledge of principles and practices associated with rural, urban, and regional planning
  • General knowledge of the principles and practices as they relate to planning and subdivision design
  • Creativity; ability to think outside the box

Nice To Haves

  • Certification of Zoning Official
  • Certified Floodplain Manager
  • Certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP)

Responsibilities

  • Administer the Unified Development Ordinance by reviewing residential and nonresidential site plans in order to issue Zoning Authorization/Compliance Permits.
  • Coordinate land development process with county staff and other agencies.
  • Review subdivision requests for compliance with regulations and coordinate subdivision process with county staff and other agencies.
  • Research customer inquiries and provide feedback based on recorded documents, Planning department files, and information from other agencies and departments.
  • Communicate professionally with citizens, applicants, and design professionals.
  • Research, gather, and compile data from resources, and collaborate with planning staff in preparation of Planning Board, Board of Adjustment, and Subdivision Review Board reports and presentations, as needed.
  • Assist with special project management on designated plans and special projects.
  • Complete other essential tasks as assigned.
