About The Position

Under the direction of the Permitting Manager, this position manages all residential and commercial building and land use permits. This includes permits for retrofits, reroofs, alterations, change of use, rehabilitation, onsite (well and septic), additions, and new construction. The role requires managing permits from application to Certificate of Occupancy issuance. Key duties involve answering technical code questions, making engineering value judgments, reviewing small project specifications for adherence to submittal requirements, receiving and resolving customer complaints, coordinating plan reviews and approvals with appropriate staff, handling cashiering and cash management (SAP), and taking customer phone calls. The position also performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and six (6) years of technical experience in engineering, permitting, plan review, surveying, computer assisted design, drafting, project management or a related field, including one (1) year enforcing Anchorage land use regulation (AMC, Title 21 or COSA), or at the Plan Reviewer I level with the Municipality of Anchorage, or the equivalent elsewhere.
  • OR Associate's degree in Urban Planning, Engineering, Drafting, Statistics, Logistics or similar discipline and four (4) years of technical experience in engineering, permitting, plan review, surveying, computer assisted design, drafting, project management or a related field, including one (1) year enforcing Anchorage land use regulation (AMC, Title 21 or COSA), or at the Plan Reviewer I level with the Municipality of Anchorage, or the equivalent elsewhere.
  • OR Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Engineering, Drafting, Statistics, Logistics or similar discipline and two (2) years of technical experience in engineering, permitting, plan review, surveying, computer assisted design, drafting, project management or a related field, including one (1) year enforcing Anchorage land use regulation (AMC, Title 21 or COSA), or at the Plan Reviewer I level with the Municipality of Anchorage, or the equivalent elsewhere.
  • Satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.

  • Preference will be given to Anchorage Municipal Employees Association (AMEA) employees.
  • AMEA employees who are successful in the screening process will be forwarded to the department for consideration prior to any non-AMEA applicants.

Responsibilities
