A Pipelayer Laborer is responsible for the quality and completion of all assigned tasks in compliance with Vogel Bros. Building Co. Quality Control and Safety Programs. Pipelayer operations involve semi-skilled and manual labor tasks. Employee must perform a variety of repetitive duties involving physical activity.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials and tools of the appropriate trade.
  • Knowledge of qualities and uses of various raw materials, tools and equipment of the specific trade.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the specific trade.
  • Knowledge of the use and care of tools, materials and equipment of the trade.
  • Knowledge of and previous experience with pipe laying work.
  • Ability to use hand tools including hammers, saws, levels, cutting tools, grinders, wrenches, etc. as appropriate to the trade.
  • Ability to interface with other personnel.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to identify problems and communicate facts to the Superintendent and Foreman.
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively manage time and equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and specifications in order to determine work procedures.
  • Ability to set up and work with pipe lasers and transits.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and bend for full work days.
  • Ability to use hands, arms, fingers, and to reach.
  • Ability to work from heights.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 150 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 85 pounds without assistance.
  • Get along with others.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with job assignments and specific instructions from the Superintendent and/or Foreman.
  • Comply with Vogel Bros. Building Co. Safety Program, jobsite specific safety rules, and directions from Supervisors.
  • Maintain high safety standards by setting a personal example.
  • Maintain and use safety equipment properly.
  • Participate in all scheduled “Safety Meetings.”
  • Follow direction from the Superintendent and/or Foreman to complete assigned tasks and goals in the expected time period.
  • Provide accurate information to complete time cards.
  • Inform the Superintendent or Foreman of specific needs for the task.
  • Attend scheduled training sessions to improve quality and productivity.
  • Dig, spread and level dirt, gravel, concrete and other construction materials.
  • Lift, carry and hold building materials, tools and supplies.
  • Clean tools, equipment, materials and work areas.
  • Remove, sort and clean concrete form systems.
  • Operate and provide general maintenance servicing of power and hand tools, pneumatic tools, machines, automobiles and construction vehicles.
  • Assemble, install and repair underground pipes and fittings, includes locating and marking correct positions of pipes and fittings in underground trenches.
  • Assemble and install valves, pipes and fittings composed of metal, PVC, ductile and concrete.
  • Measure and cut pipes.
  • Test pipes for leakage.
  • Join pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder and plastic solvent cement.
  • Direct equipment operators with hand signals.
  • Backfill around pipes using hand tools.
  • Provide support to all of the trades as needed.
  • All pipelayer tools required to complete the work must be provided by the pipelayer. These include a hammer, welder’s hammer, ball peen hammer, tape measure, plumb bob, torpedo level, laser, crescent wrench, MJ wrenches, pipe wrench, pliers, screw drivers, chisels, pipe wrap, rubber boots, gloves and any other trade-specific tools.
