About The Position

Pipefitter I is an entry level position responsible for the installation and repair of sewer lines, manholes, sewer line cleaning, sewer crossing, inverted siphons, and other sewer components that transport sewer from homes and business to treatment plants. The pipefitter I is required to be available for emergency calls and is considered an essential position. This is a manual labor-intensive position and is required to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Working significant amounts of overtime is to be expected with this position. Punctuality and attendance are necessary. On the job training and support are available. This is a career ladder position; with training and experience promotion to Pipefitter II is available. The Pipefitter II is responsible for the installation and repair of sewer lines, manholes, sewer line cleaning, sewer crossings, inverted siphons, and other sewer components that transport sewer from homes and business to treatment plants. The Pipefitter II is required to be available for emergency calls and is considered an essential position. This is a manual labor-intensive position and is required to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Working significant amounts of overtime is to be expected with this position. Punctuality and attendance are necessary. This is a career ladder position; with training and experience promotion to Pipefitter III is available. Pipefitter III is a position responsible for the installation and repair of sewer lines, manholes, sewer line cleaning, sewer crossings, inverted siphons and other sewer components that transport sewer from homes and business to treatment plants. The pipefitter III is required to be available for emergency calls and is considered an essential position. This is a manual labor-intensive position and is required to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Working significant amounts of overtime is to be expected with this position. Punctuality and attendance are necessary Punctuality and attendance are necessary. Supervisors lower-level employees and assume the duties of a Foreperson in their absence This is a career ladder position; with training and experience promotion to Water/Sewer Foreperson I is available.

Requirements

  • Valid Texas C class Driver's License.
  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • One year of experience in water work, utilities, or another related field.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of pipefitting tools and processes.
  • Complete Competent Person training.
  • Employee must have a rating of “good or better” on previous performance appraisal.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Two years of experience in sewer work, utilities, or another related field.
  • Complete the OSHA 10 Course

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred experience in water works, utilities, or another related field
  • Pipefitter I is encouraged to learn excavation techniques to expose sewer systems in need of repair.
  • Pipefitter I will have the opportunity to attend trenching and shoring training.
  • Pipefitter I is encouraged to learn operation techniques for light to heavy equipment, such as backhoes, dump trucks, skid loaders, and mini excavators.
  • Pipefitter I is encouraged to obtain a class A driver’s license.
  • Pipefitter II is encouraged to obtain a Class 1 TCEQ Wastewater Collection Operator License.
  • Pipefitter II is encouraged to complete OSHA 10 training course.
  • Pipefitter II is encouraged to complete traffic control training courses.
  • Pipefitter III is encouraged to obtain a Class 2 TCEQ Wastewater Collection Operator License.
  • Pipefitter III is encouraged to complete OSHA 30 training course.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and replace damaged sewer lines, sewer manholes, sewer crossings, inverted siphons, and other sewer components.
  • Assist performing internal inspection of sewer pipelines detecting internal leaks and pipe damage.
  • Assist in cleaning sewer lines using rodding machine or high pressure jetted machine to clear obstructions needed to restore proper sewer flow.
  • Perform daily inspection of assigned vehicles, trailers, and other equipment.
  • Work in trenches and follow all trench shoring procedures.
  • Work in confined areas (streets, alleys, easements, etc.) to install and maintain sewer services.
  • Perform confined space entry to make necessary repairs when needed.
  • Perform manual labor in the completion of duties as assigned.
  • Work safely in traffic and set up traffic control according to the Texas MUTCD.
  • Work in confined areas (streets, alleys, easements, etc.) to install and maintain water services.
  • Adhere to all safety policies and procedures, including the proper usage of Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Participate in on-call rotations to quickly resolve after-hours service disruptions.
  • Read, interpret, and understand maps and drawings.
  • Learn how to operate the Cartegraph Asset Management system.
  • Obtain the skills needed to navigate the system by inputting tasks, work orders, labor cost, attachments, request etc.
  • Represent the City of Amarillo in a positive manner when working around customers and while performing all duties.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Excavate sewer systems in need of repair by operating heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to dig in confined areas (such as streets, alleys, easements, etc.) where other utilities are installed without interruption of services or damage to infrastructure.
  • Operate light to heavy equipment, such as backhoes, dump trucks, skid loaders, and mini excavators.
  • Assist in on-the-job training for new employees.
  • Demonstrate proficiency working with the Caretegraph Asset Management system.
  • Obtain a Class A Driver’s License.
  • Obtain a Class 1 TCEQ Wastewater Collection Operator License within one year of hire.
  • Possess a Class A Driver’s License or be able to obtain within one year of hire.
  • Must possess the knowledge and skill to operate both rodding truck and Vactor truck.
  • Will take over the role and responsibilities of the Foreperson during their absence.
