About The Position

The Pipe Layer assembles, connects, and constructs pipe systems for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, and water mains. The role prepares trenches to specifications, aligns pipes, seals joints, and works with the pipe crew to install water and sewer mains. The hourly pay rate depends on experience. Zachry Underground & Utility Services performs heavy civil, underground, and utility work throughout the United States; relocation may be required for ongoing opportunities and career growth.

Requirements

• 3–5 years of experience in water and sewer utility construction.
• Experience setting up to 48-inch sewer and installing fiberglass manholes.
• Knowledge of working with PVC, metal, HDPE, or fiberglass pipes.
• Basic knowledge of operating hand and power tools.
• Physical ability to perform assigned labor-related tasks, including lifting, climbing, bending, and standing.
• Flexibility to work days, nights, and weekends as needed.
• Dependable, self-motivated, and able to work well within a team environment.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with bypass pumping.

Responsibilities

• Set up lasers with grades and verify percentage slopes on drawings.
• Configure pipe routes, align pipeline sections, and ensure proper spacing and alignment.
• Grade trenches or culverts and install manholes, valves, and fittings.
• Seal joints and ensure proper fit and alignment using grade rods or transit levels.
• Cover installed pipes with soil or other materials to secure them in place.
• Work with PVC, metal, HDPE, and fiberglass pipes.
• Operate hand and power tools as required for trenching and installation.
• Follow required safety rules, policies, and guidelines.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
