About The Position

The Pilot/Escort Vehicle Driver provides escort services for oversize and overweight loads transporting heavy equipment and materials along approved routes. This role ensures the safe, legal, and efficient movement of oversize loads by identifying route hazards, communicating with the load driver, and complying with state-specific pilot car regulations. This is a temporary, entry-level opportunity, with the potential to transition into a full-time Laborer position once the need for an escort driver concludes.

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license with a minimum of 5-year clean motor vehicle record (MVR).
  • Minimum 21 years of age for insurance purposes.
  • Pass pre-employment drug test and background check.
  • State-issued pilot/escort vehicle certification in Colorado or a reciprocal state (AZ, FL, MN, OK, UT, WA).
  • Working knowledge of oversize/overweight load regulations and pilot car procedures.
  • Ability to operate a two-way radio/CB and communicate clearly and calmly under pressure.
  • Strong attention to detail and situational awareness.
  • Reliable, self-directed, and comfortable working independently for extended periods.
  • Ability to read maps, permits, and route documentation.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is a mandatory requirement for this role, as it is essential for understanding work instructions, safety protocols, and participating in team communications.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience as a pilot car/escort driver in a construction, trucking, or heavy-haul environment.
  • Familiarity with Colorado oversize load regulations.
  • High/low pole certification for overhead clearance escorts.

Responsibilities

  • Escort oversize and/or overweight loads in accordance with state and local pilot/escort vehicle regulations.
  • Maintain continuous visual and radio/CB contact with the load driver throughout the route.
  • Identify and communicate route hazards in advance, including low clearances, narrow lanes, sharp turns, bridges, utility lines, and work zones.
  • Position the escort vehicle correctly (lead or chase) based on load dimensions and state requirements.
  • Equip and maintain the escort vehicle with required signage, flags, height poles, amber lights, and other state-mandated equipment.
  • Review permits and planned routes prior to each trip to confirm compliance with permit restrictions (time of day, route, escort count).
  • Coordinate trip timing and routing with dispatch, superintendents, and equipment operators.
  • Complete required trip logs, inspection forms, and documentation accurately and on time.
  • Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections of the escort vehicle and report any mechanical issues immediately.
  • Respond appropriately to changing traffic, weather, and road conditions to maintain safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Operations team.
