About The Position

Physics Learning Assistants (LAs) play a crucial role in supporting student learning in physics courses. Their primary responsibilities include helping students develop effective learning strategies, assisting with problem-solving in the lab environment, and ensuring the smooth operation of physics labs. LAs are expected to stay current with the physics material being taught, attend their assigned labs, and contribute to maintaining a safe and organized lab space. There may also be opportunities to assist in physics lectures and potentially with grading. The time commitment is approximately 3 hours per week for one lab, with an additional 1.75 hours per week for each extra lab. Furthermore, required training and professional development sessions may add 10-15 hours per semester.

Requirements

  • Must be a current or incoming CSS student
  • Availability for some physics lab(s) on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays for the next academic year
  • Good grades (B+ or better) in physics, mathematics, and chemistry courses (or a trend of recent improvement)
  • Evidence of being helpful to partners in physics
  • Thoughtfulness regarding strategies for learning
  • Interpersonal and communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Federal work study eligibility is preferred
  • Excellent grades (A- or better) in physics, mathematics, and chemistry courses (or a trend of significant recent improvement)
  • Calculus experience
  • Overlap with other peer mentoring / teaching positions, such as being a tutor, a CLG/SI leader, homework session leader, Dignitas MTA, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Stay prepared on upcoming physics material
  • Attend weekly prep meeting, then one or more physics labs
  • Help students learn in physics labs
  • Assist with safety and organization in the physics lab
  • Possible occasional help in physics lectures
  • Other possible duties as assigned
