About The Position

This part-time remote consulting opportunity is for PhD-level physicists and advanced-stage doctoral researchers with research expertise in theoretical, computational, or experimental physics. Contractors contribute to an advanced AI training and scientific problem-solving project by solving research-level physics problems in their areas of specialisation, developing rigorous mathematical derivations, verifying results computationally where appropriate, and documenting their reasoning to professional research standards. No prior AI experience is required. The work calls for strong physical intuition, mathematical and computational fluency, and precise scientific communication. Assignments may vary according to the contractor’s research specialisation and project requirements. The engagement is expected to last approximately 8–10 weeks, with a preferred consistent commitment of about 10 hours per week and an expected commitment of approximately 10–15 or more hours per week. The schedule is fully flexible and may include evenings or weekends. Work must not use confidential or proprietary information belonging to an employer, client, institution, research group, or other third party. The opportunity is available through 24-MAG LLC, which connects experienced professionals with remote consulting opportunities across technical, evaluation, and project-based workstreams.

Requirements

  • PhD in physics or advanced-stage PhD candidacy with active research experience.
  • Research expertise in theoretical, computational, or experimental physics.
  • Strong mathematical and computational problem-solving ability.
  • Proficiency with LaTeX for technical and mathematical writing.
  • Ability to identify assumptions, boundary conditions, dimensional issues, and subtle technical edge cases.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written scientific communication.
  • Ability to isolate key physical principles and construct nuanced solutions to complex problems.
  • Consistent availability of approximately 10 hours per week is preferred during the engagement.
  • Do not use confidential or proprietary information belonging to an employer, client, institution, research group, or other third party.

Nice To Haves

  • Research expertise in one or more of High Energy Physics, Mathematical Physics, Biophysics, Statistical Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, AMO or Quantum Optics, Gravitation, Cosmology, Astrophysics, Quantum Information, or Optical Properties of Materials.
  • Relevant condensed matter experience, such as moiré systems, magnetism, or PXP/Rydberg systems.
  • Familiarity with SymPy, Python, and Jupyter for computational verification.
  • Ability to provide 2–5 representative recent publications from approximately the past five years with accessible arXiv or DOI records.

Responsibilities

  • Solve challenging physics problems within an area of research expertise.
  • Develop rigorous derivations and technically defensible analyses.
  • Identify the physical principles governing complex problems and explicitly state assumptions, approximations, and limitations.
  • Address special cases, limiting regimes, and relevant boundary conditions where needed.
  • Prepare precise, well-structured solutions using appropriate mathematical notation and LaTeX.
  • Check dimensional consistency and mathematical validity, and identify ambiguities or subtleties in problem statements.
  • Use Python, SymPy, Jupyter, or comparable tools for symbolic and numerical verification where appropriate.
  • Develop reproducible computational workflows and distinguish numerical approximations from exact analytical conclusions.
  • Flag ambiguous, incomplete, or technically problematic project materials and propose reasoned interpretations or clarifications.
  • Respond to reviewer feedback, revise solutions, and maintain quality, clarity, consistency, and reproducibility across submissions.
