About The Position

The OB/GYN Laborist Role A is an in-house position which ensures that safe, high quality, evidence-based care is provided to obstetric patients and that hospital resources are managed in a clinically appropriate way. In sites where residents and/or medical students are present this may include resident supervision and education. The OB/GYN Laborist Role A is the primary, first line provider who is expected to be immediately available and present during the entirety of their shift. This role involves 24 Hour In-House Call Coverage at high volume labor and delivery units (>3,000 deliveries per year).

Requirements

  • Doctorate
  • Graduate of approved Medical College
  • LIC-Physician (MD) - State of Michigan Upon Hire required OR LIC-Osteopathic Physician (DO) - State of Michigan Upon Hire required
  • CRT-DEA Registration - State of Michigan Upon Hire required

Responsibilities

  • Prevention of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality by ensuring that all inpatient obstetric care meets and/or exceeds current standards of care.
  • Identification and remediation of any area of clinical concern via collaboration with the members of the obstetric care team.
  • Ensure that unit resources are managed in a clinically appropriate need-based way, which may include prioritization of pending labor inductions and pending cesarean deliveries.
  • Provide on-site, restricted obstetric care for patients who have had no prenatal care, have had prenatal care with the staff service, have had prenatal care with a provider who does not have privileges at the facility, or have had prenatal care with a provider who is unable to be present.
  • Facilitation of transfers from outside hospitals, which may include accepting all medically appropriate transfers, informing all relevant members of the obstetric/neonatal team of pending arrival of transfer, and management of transfer upon arrival.
  • Lead scheduled Safety Huddles and post-event debriefing sessions.
  • Provide clinical assistance to other ob/gyn attendings, advanced practice providers, and resident physicians, which may include second opinions for fetal heart rate interpretations, assistance in managing obstetric emergencies, surgical assistance with cesarean delivery and obstetrical laceration repair, and multifetal deliveries.
  • Supervise and support resident physicians’ management of obstetrics patients, which may include triage evaluation and management, and antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum management.
