Sutter West Bay Medical Group is seeking a motivated Physician, Inpatient Hematology Oncology to join our multidisciplinary oncology care team in San Francisco. Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Eligible for unrestricted California medical licensure.
  • Eligible for DEA registration and hospital medical staff privileges.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Hematology and Medical Oncology.

Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive, evidence-based care to adult inpatients through their hematologic and oncologic journey.
  • Serves as a key member of the multidisciplinary oncology team, evaluating and managing complex hematology and oncology patients from diagnosis through treatment, complications management, palliative care, and transitions of care across multiple hospital campuses.
  • Evaluates new inpatient hematology and oncology consult requests from the emergency department, hospitalist services, and specialty teams.
  • Performs comprehensive history and physical examinations and develops diagnostic and treatment plans for patients with complex malignant and non-malignant hematologic and oncologic conditions.
  • Conducts daily inpatient rounds and ongoing clinical assessments.
  • Orders, interprets, and integrates laboratory studies, pathology results, molecular testing, and diagnostic imaging into patient management plans.
  • Provides consultation services at the Van Ness Campus and supports consultation needs at Davies and Mission Bernal campuses, including telehealth-based consultations as appropriate.
  • Directs and oversees inpatient treatment plans, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, cellular therapies, transfusion support, and other oncology-related interventions.
  • Monitors treatment response and toxicity, modifying care plans based on clinical status and evolving evidence-based guidelines.
  • Manages oncologic emergencies and acute hematologic complications, including but not limited to: Tumor lysis syndrome, Spinal cord compression, Febrile neutropenia, Hypercalcemia of malignancy, Disseminated intravascular coagulation, Thrombotic and bleeding disorders, Cytopenias and transfusion-related complications.
  • Collaborates closely with intensive care, infectious disease, radiation oncology, surgical, and other specialty teams as needed.
  • Leads discussions regarding goals of care, prognosis, and treatment options.
  • Provides symptom management and coordinates care with palliative care and hospice services when appropriate.
  • Partners with patients and families to support informed decision-making throughout the continuum of care.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams including hospitalists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, case managers, and palliative care specialists.
  • Ensures seamless coordination across inpatient and outpatient settings to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Facilitates appropriate discharge planning, outpatient oncology follow-up, infusion therapy coordination, and transitions to post-acute or specialty care settings.
  • Communicates effectively with referring physicians and outpatient oncology providers.
  • Educates patients and caregivers regarding diagnoses, treatment options, anticipated side effects, prognosis, and supportive care resources.
  • Promotes shared decision-making and patient-centered care.
