About The Position

The role of a Physician - Independent Medical Examiner / Reviewer is to provide expert medicolegal review and examination for death and disability claims related to public safety officers. This involves reviewing medical records, conducting in-person examinations, and assessing a claimant's ability to work or perform daily life needs. The Medical Specialist will provide formal written reports of their findings and conclusions to the PSOB Office, COR, and the Point of Contact. The position requires a medical degree and board certification in a relevant specialty. The work is performed on an as-needed basis, with estimated volumes for death and disability claims per fiscal year. The Medical Specialist will receive training on the PSOB law, regulations, and program.

Requirements

  • Medical degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Certified by an appropriate medical board in one of the following specialties or subspecialty: forensic pathology, orthopedics, neurology, psychiatry, pulmonology, cardiology, internal medicine, or other specialty or subspecialty as required by BJA.
  • Agree not to disclose the medical opinion or release any medical records or information pertaining to PSOB cases to anyone other than the representatives of the PSOB Program.

  • Licensed legal nurse (for Legal Nurse Review task).

Responsibilities

  • Review of all medical and related records provided by the claimant, physicians, and any others as indicated.
  • Conduct an in-person examination of the claimant, at an agreed upon location accessible and within a reasonable distance to the claimant.
  • Assess whether or not a claimant is able to perform any type of gainful work.
  • Determine if a claimant is able to function or perform everyday life needs.
  • Review and organize medical records by a licensed legal nurse.
  • Deliver electronic medical reports to the PSOB Office, COR and the Point of Contact.
  • Provide a formal written review and report of the medical findings and conclusions contained in the PSOB file regarding the public safety officer’s injury or death.
  • Provide in-person examinations and subsequent medical reports of the medical findings and conclusions of that examination.
  • Conduct expert medicolegal reviews or expert medical examinations prior to determining benefit eligibility.
  • Review public safety officer’s medical and related records regarding a line of duty injury or death.
  • Review medical evidence, testimony, and other information provided at the appeal level on death or disability claims.
  • Conduct research and draft documents and memoranda related to the PSOB Program, law, regulations, and related issues as requested by the BJA Director.
  • Perform in-person examinations based on the Medical Specialist’s specialty and widely recognized standards of the medical profession and licensing requirements.
  • Complete virtual training by the PSOB Office if indicated.
