Physician II - ETTF Unit
About The Position
The mission of Correctional Managed Care is to address the healthcare needs of underserved patient populations within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD). This role provides professional services related to the diagnosis and treatment of inmate patients and employees injured as a result of TDCJ-ID work-related activities. The Physician II ensures that appropriate healthcare is accessible and provided to the inmate population in a timely fashion, rendering final medical judgment regarding care provided to inmates assigned to the unit according to Health Services Policies and Procedures. This position directs all Health Services activities on the unit and assumes ultimate responsibility for all Health Services employees assigned to the unit. The role works under the general direction of the Regional Physician with extensive latitude for the exercise of initiative and independent judgment.
Requirements
- Must hold a current license to practice medicine by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners.
- Must hold current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) controlled substances registration.

Responsibilities
- Performs complete medical histories and physician examinations.
- Forms clinical impressions based upon findings.
- Orders diagnostic tests, interprets results of laboratory tests and radiological examinations, prescribes medications, and renders treatments appropriate to clinical impressions.
- Inspects, completes, and analyzes medical records.
- Assigns, reviews, and updates medical classifications.
- Completes admission notes, progress notes, and discharge summaries.
- Makes rounds on patients admitted to infirmaries or regional medical facilities.
- Refers patients to specialists for consultations, evaluations, and treatments.
- Serves in rotation with other physicians to provide after-hours and weekend patient care.
- Directly supervises all physicians and mid-level practitioners.
- Oversees and manages all operations of the unit's medical department, ensuring compliance with all applicable standards, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and court orders.
- Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure established for department.
- Performs related duties as required.
