About The Position

Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is looking to add a Board Eligible/Board Certified general surgeon to its established group of providers at Sanford Clinic Worthington. The physician will work in conjunction with other Sanford Clinic surgeons to provide General Surgery services to Southwestern Minnesota communities. Call is shared with 3 General Surgeons. Medical, Surgical, and ICU units are attended by dedicated hospitalists. The clinic services include family medicine, pediatrics, orthopedics and sports medicine, podiatry, OB/GYN, surgery, and acute care. Medical oncology, hematology, and radiation oncology services are offered at Sanford Worthington Cancer Center. Worthington is a progressive, growing community located on the shores of beautiful Lake Okabena, offering extensive outdoor recreation opportunities, cultural diversity, entertainment, and shopping.

Requirements

  • M.D. or D.O. degree.
  • Successful completion of a hospital affiliated surgical residency program or a clinical fellowship of at least five years’ duration accredited by the ACGME, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) or the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada.
  • Certification by the appropriate specialty board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as applicable.
  • Applicants who are not board certified at the time of application but who have completed their residency training within the last five years shall be eligible, however must achieve board certification within five years from the date of completion of their residency training unless the appropriate governing Board waives such requirement.
  • Experience can be demonstrated by: completion of residency and providing residency or fellowship log; OR providing a quality profile from hospital(s) where currently has privileges showing clinical activity for the past 12 months, including numbers of procedures, morbidity, mortality, infection rates and other complications; OR if a quality profile is not available, documentation of the applicant’s clinical activity for the past 12 months is required.
  • Must be able to demonstrate active involvement in the clinical aspects of General Surgery and case volumes should show performance of at least 100 procedures in the past 12 months.

Nice To Haves

  • Training at residency programs accredited by organizations other than ACGME, AOA, or Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada may be considered by the Credentials Committee; Physician Executive or Medical Affairs Committee; and the Board of Directors or the Board of Governors.
  • More education and experience may be required the more advanced the practice becomes.

Responsibilities

  • Work in conjunction with other Sanford Clinic surgeons to provide General Surgery services to Southwestern Minnesota communities.
  • Provide General Surgery Core Privileges including the ability to admit, evaluate, diagnose and provide pre-, intra-, and postoperative care and perform surgical procedures for adolescents and adults.
  • Correct or treat various conditions, illnesses, and injuries of the alimentary tract, abdomen and its contents, breast, skin, soft tissue, head and neck, endocrine system, and minor extremity surgery.
  • Provide for the on-call emergent/urgent needs of the pediatric and pre-adolescent surgical patient within the core privilege definition.
