About The Position

Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is seeking a general neurologist and/or fellowship-trained neurologist to join an active and well-developed neurology group. The group includes 14 experienced neurologists and 6 Advanced Practice Providers with expertise in various subspecialties such as neuromuscular disease, epilepsy, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, headache, stroke, and sleep. The inpatient neurology team consists of vascular neurologists, neurosurgeons, and Neurocritical Care physicians who provide coverage for inpatient hospital services, ED, and tele-stroke. There are opportunities to train future neurologists through the Neurology Residency program (started in 2023) and serve as clinical faculty for the USD Sanford School of Medicine. The position is located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, which offers a high quality of life, a strong economy, and a safe, clean environment with amenities comparable to larger cities, a competitive cost of living, and no state income tax.

Requirements

  • M.D. or D.O. degree.
  • Successful completion of a Neurology residency program accredited by the ACGME, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) or the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada.
  • Certification in the primary area of practice by the appropriate specialty/subspecialty board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as applicable.
  • Applicants who are not board certified at the time of application but who have completed their residency training within the last five years must achieve board certification within five years from the date of completion of their residency training unless the appropriate governing Board waives such requirement.
  • Experience can be demonstrated by residency logs and completed rotations for recent graduates, or a quality profile from current hospitals showing clinical activity for the last 12 months (including procedures, morbidity, mortality, infection rates, and complications) for applicants not applying directly out of residency.
  • Must demonstrate active involvement of inpatient services with at least 50 patients in the last 12 months, or active involvement in the care of 50 patients in clinical practice in the last 12 months if a quality profile is not available.
  • Training at residency programs accredited by organizations other than ACGME, AOA, or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada may be considered via the waiver of eligibility process.

Responsibilities

  • Perform history and physical examination.
  • Admit patients (if applicable to the setting).
  • Provide consultative services.
  • Evaluate, diagnose, and provide nonsurgical care to patients of all ages presenting with illnesses, injuries, and disorders of the neurologic system.
