About The Position

Sanford Health is seeking two BC/BE fellowship-trained Interventional Cardiologists to establish and grow a new Interventional Cardiology service line in Rapid City, South Dakota. This is a unique opportunity for a physician who is excited by program development and wants to play a key role in shaping the future of cardiovascular care across western SD and the surrounding region. The successful candidate will work closely with Sanford Health leadership, referring providers, and regional specialists to build a thriving interventional practice. There is an opportunity to help define clinical strategy, referral development, and service growth. The clinical practice in the building phase will be approximately 50% General Cardiology / 50% Interventional Cardiology. As the interventional practice matures, the procedural component is expected to grow with increasing referral volume. The physician will provide Interventional Cardiology services, including coronary and peripheral interventions based on training and experience, and participate in call coverage. An existing cath lab is available in the Sanford Black Hills Surgical Hospital, with MRI, CT, PET, and Echo imaging available. Inpatient consults will be at the Sanford Black Hills Surgical Hospital, with low volume. A transfer agreement is in place to a local hospital for cardio-thoracic surgery support if needed.

Requirements

BC/BE fellowship-trained Interventional Cardiologist.
M.D. or D.O. degree.
Successful completion of a hospital-affiliated Internal Medicine residency program of at least 3 years’ duration.
Completion of a fellowship in Cardiology of at least 3 years’ duration.
Successfully completed an additional 12 months of fellowship training in Interventional Cardiology.
ACGM E, American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada accredited programs.
Certification by the appropriate specialty /subspecialty board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as applicable.
Those applicants who are not board certified at the time of application but who have completed their residency training within the last five years shall be eligible, however must achieve board certification within five years from the date of completion of their residency training unless the appropriate governing Board waives such requirement.
For Interventional catheterization skills, applicants should provide documentation of 250 interventional procedures as the primary operator within the past 24 months and a letter of reference regarding competency from the director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at the institution where the applicant most recently practiced.
If a quality profile is not available from the hospital(s) where the applicant currently has privileges, documentation of the applicant’s hospital-based clinical activity for the past 24 months is required.
The first 10 Cardiac Catheterization procedures at Sanford Medical Center will be performed under the supervision of the Medical Director of the Cath Lab or Physician Designee.
All providers requesting Laser Privileges must meet with the Laser Safety Officer prior to scheduling their first case to review safety & personnel precautions, scheduling criteria and laser equipment at the Sanford Facility.

Fellowship log with a minimum of 250 therapeutic interventional cardiac procedures documented and a letter of reference from the fellowship director (if just completed fellowship).
Quality profile from hospital(s) where he/she currently has privileges showing clinical activity for the past 24 months, including numbers of procedures performed morbidity, mortality, infection rates, and other complications (if not applying directly out of fellowship).

Responsibilities

Perform history and physical examinations, admit, evaluate, treat, and provide consultation to patients of all ages with acute and chronic coronary artery disease, acute coronary syndromes, and valvular heart disease.
