The Physician Assistant (PA) will work in the Orthopedics Department at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA. This outpatient clinic provides comprehensive orthopedic care to Active Duty and Retired Service members and their families. The sub-specialty focus of this role is Orthopedic Hand. The PA will be responsible for a full range of musculoskeletal care, including examination, diagnosis, and treatment of various musculoskeletal disorders and injuries. They will also manage nonsurgical musculoskeletal problems, treat peripheral nervous system disorders, assist in generalized conditioning and injury rehabilitation, and evaluate chronic pain conditions. Additionally, the PA will perform functional capacity testing and be involved in pre-, intra-, and post-operative duties. This includes patient evaluation, assisting in procedures, and managing post-operative care such as wound care and splint changes. The PA will also manage patient care processes like admission and discharge orders (under physician review) and document patient progress. A key responsibility includes carrying the departmental duty pager on a rotating basis to respond to calls from the ER, clinics, and the fleet, providing examination, diagnosis, and treatment for musculoskeletal disorders. The role also involves reviewing consults through the computer referral system.
