About The Position

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) is seeking to hire a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to provide primary health care services. The selected candidate will join a team of Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and other health care professionals at the Reception and Treatment Center. This role is crucial in providing essential healthcare within the correctional system.

Requirements

  • Physician Assistant: Graduation from an American Medical Association approved Physician Assistant program or have passed the National Commission Certification examination.
  • Nurse Practitioner: Successful completion of an accredited program for Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner.
  • Incumbents must have a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse and be certified as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Nebraska.
  • Certification and current license as a Physician Assistant in the State of Nebraska.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Knowledge of Life Sciences including Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Histology, and Embryology.
  • Knowledge of the use and effect of modern drugs.
  • Knowledge of primary care medicine as outlined by the Nebraska State Board of Medical Examiners for Physician Assistants.
  • Skill in interacting effectively with interdisciplinary teams toward proving medical care.
  • Skill in clinical assessments and differential diagnosis.
  • Skill in physical examination.
  • Skill in basic CPR.
  • Skill in interpreting laboratory data and x-rays.
  • Skill in performing minor surgery.
  • Skill in proctoscopy.
  • Skill in the treatment of non-displaced fractures and casting.
  • Skill in documenting observations and diagnosis.
  • Ability to gain confidence and cooperation of patients, the medical staff, and students.
  • Ability to initiate primary care for patients when necessary.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing with patients, family members and/or guardians, nurses, team members, and other medical staff.
  • Ability to react effectively to medical and psychiatric emergencies.

Nice To Haves

  • Supervisory experience helpful for Physician Assistants.
  • Experience working as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner within a clinical setting or equivalent experience.
  • Work experience as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in a correctional or institutional setting.
  • Current CPR/ALCS certification preferred (required within one year of hire).
