About The Position

The Trauma Surgery Nurse Practitioner provides advanced nursing care to critically injured patients in the emergency, operative, and intensive care settings. The PA/NP works collaboratively with trauma surgeons, emergency physicians, and multidisciplinary teams to evaluate, stabilize, and manage acute trauma cases and support recovery.

Requirements

  • For Nurse Practitioners - Completion of a master’s, post-master’s, or doctorate from a nurse practitioner program accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education or National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.
  • Current licensure by the applicable state board of nursing for advanced practice.
  • For Physician Assistants - Master’s or Baccalaureate degree.
  • Successful completion of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors.
  • Successful completion of the national certifying examination and current certification given by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of hire.
  • Additional department-specific certifications, licenses, or memberships may be required (varies by department/location).
  • Obtains and subsequently maintains required specific competencies and certifications as outlined on privilege form.
  • Privileging documents and related credentialing requirements will supersede this job description in defining minimum qualifications, criteria, and scope of practice, if variation between documents exists.

Responsibilities

  • Perform rapid and comprehensive assessments of trauma patients in the emergency department and ICU.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests including labs, X-rays, CT scans, and other imaging studies.
  • Assist in surgical procedures and trauma resuscitations as appropriate.
  • Manage preoperative and postoperative care, including wound management, pain control, and monitoring for complications.
  • Coordinate patient care transitions, including transfer to rehabilitation or other care facilities.
  • Provide patient and family education on injury, treatment plans, and recovery expectations.
  • Participate in trauma rounds, multidisciplinary case conferences, and quality improvement activities.
  • Document all assessments, interventions, and patient progress accurately and promptly.
  • Adhere to trauma protocols and guidelines to ensure high-quality patient care.
  • Participate in trauma research and continuing education to maintain clinical competency.
