Requirements

  • Current New York State Physician Assistant License
  • Physician Assistant Bachelors Degree (BA-PA)
  • Basic Life Support Certification through the American Heart Association
  • National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certification
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced Life Support certification (ACLS, PALS) through the American Heart Association
  • Neonatal Resuscitation certification (NRP) through the American Academy of Pediatrics

Responsibilities

  • Participates in daily rounds to observe and record patient progress, update charts, write orders and progress notes, and notify the Physician of changes in patient condition.
  • Participates in team conferences, lectures, and grand rounds for the service.
  • Instructs and counsels patients and their families about preventative care, medical problems, treatments, medications, normal growth and development, family planning, and situational adjustment reactions.
  • Assists the supervisor Physician and back-up Physicians with procedures within the scope of practice.
  • Performs BLS and ACLS procedures in life-threatening situations when a Physician is unavailable and with Physician when appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Elicits detailed and accurate history and performs appropriate physical examinations on inpatients and outpatients.
  • Orders and interprets laboratory tests, x-rays, EKGs, and diagnostic procedures; writes prescriptions according to service protocols and New York State regulations for Physician Assistants.
  • Performs specific procedures including, but not limited to: drawing blood specimens, performing blood counts, urinalysis, pap smears, bacteriologic smears, gram stains, vital capacity measurements, administering oxygen, incisions and drainage, wound care and debridement, nasogastric and nasotracheal intubation, gastric analysis, lumbar punctures, routine suturing of lacerations, skin biopsies, placing indwelling arterial catheters and making blood gas determinations, applying and removing casts and traction apparatus, starting I.V. solutions, administering I.V. medications, and other therapeutic procedures after specific supervised training and evaluation.
  • Initiates consultations and refers patients for special testing according to hospital protocols.
