About The Position

Hampton Proton is seeking a Physician Assistant Intern to join their team. This internship program offers a valuable opportunity to gain experience in a leading proton therapy facility. Interns will have the chance to observe physician consultations, assist with patient referrals, and participate in multi-disciplinary patient care teams. The role involves interacting with patients, supporting continuity of care, and contributing to a high-quality healthcare environment. Responsibilities include administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, obtaining medical histories, preparing patients for examinations, and maintaining medical records. Interns will also build relationships with patients undergoing treatment and collaborate with the healthcare team to improve patient quality of life. At the end of the internship, students will present a PowerPoint summarizing their learning and experiences.

Requirements

  • Completed Hampton Proton Internship Application and Questionnaire.
  • Proof of being currently enrolled in a program of study or a recent graduate (within 12 months) from an accredited college/university or technical/vocational institution.
  • Proof of good academic standing (unofficial transcripts are acceptable).
  • Proof of academic class schedule.
  • Recent resume and/or cover letter.
  • Applicable course syllabus if academic credit will be applied from your educational institution.

Responsibilities

  • Observe physician consultation of new patients with various cancer diagnoses (with patient agreement).
  • Assist with referral appointments for consultations and support services (e.g., social workers, dietitians, physicians).
  • Participate in a multi-disciplinary patient care team involving clinical and non-clinical staff.
  • Interact with patients to achieve organizational objectives, including continuity of care, quality healthcare services, patient safety, and patient satisfaction.
  • Greet patients, answer telephones, schedule appointments (including arrival appointments in MOSAIQ), check out patients, and schedule referrals.
  • Arrange for hospital admissions, referrals, and laboratory services.
  • Update and file patient medical records.
  • Fill out forms and handle patient-related correspondence requests.
  • Order clinical clerical supplies and forms.
  • Obtain medical histories and record vital signs.
  • Explain treatment procedures to patients.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and procedures.
  • Initiate, build, and maintain relationships with patients, offering support and guidance during Proton Radiation Therapy Treatments.
  • Work collaboratively with the Proton Radiation team and external care providers to improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families.
  • Create and present a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation at the completion of the internship, covering topics such as educational background, post-graduation plans, internship learnings, completed tasks/projects, developed skills, professional strengths/weaknesses, internship enjoyment, and suggestions for future interns.
