The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) treats the patient with a specific treatment program designed by the physical therapist, under the guidance of the physical therapist and physician. The PTA is also responsible for coordinating any changes in the patient’s condition to the physical therapist, working toward maximizing the patient’s functional level. This role involves treating patients in their home setting and requires understanding and demonstrating appropriate behavior when interacting with patients of all populations. The PTA educates and trains patients and their families regarding the therapy plan, home exercise program, home safety, and diagnosis/illness. They are responsible for taking measurements of the patient’s condition, reporting and coordinating these and any other changes to the supervising physical therapist, and maintaining professionalism consistent with APTA and HHP codes of ethics. The PTA provides specific patient treatment and progress documentation to the physical therapist and Agency, participates in face-to-face patient conferences with the Physical Therapist as state regulations require, and participates in mandatory case conferences. Prompt completion of appropriate documentation is essential for compliance with company policy. Demonstrating commitment and professional growth through in-service programs and maintaining/improving competency, as well as meeting mandatory continuing education requirements, are also key aspects of this role.
