Physical Therapist - Full Time, Days
About The Position
NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is hiring a Physical Therapist for its Physical & Speech Therapy team. The therapist evaluates, tests, and treats inpatients referred for physical therapy; develops comprehensive therapeutic plans; documents patient progress; revises treatment plans as appropriate; educates patients about disease processes; and participates in discharge planning. The role uses physical therapy modalities and techniques and may provide lectures and demonstrations to hospital staff and affiliations upon request. The therapist covers all physical therapy areas, reviews medical records and histories, conducts and documents evaluations and progress notes, establishes goals with patients, selects interventions and equipment, and adapts care as patient status changes. The position coordinates care with other services and communicates with physicians, nursing staff, patients, and families. It also involves documentation, customer service, quality improvement, professional development, and assisting with supervision of Physical Therapy Assistants and rehabilitation support staff. The schedule is Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The role requires a minimum Bachelor of Science degree from an approved physical therapy curriculum, New York State licensure or eligibility for licensure with current registration, and current basic life support.
Requirements
- Graduation from an approved physical therapy curriculum with a minimum Bachelor of Science degree.
- New York State Physical Therapist license or eligibility for licensure with current registration.
- Current basic life support.
- Demonstrated professional behavior when interacting with others.
- Ability to adapt physical therapy care with respect and sensitivity to individual differences.
- Ability to communicate in ways that fit situational needs.
- Ability to walk and stand for up to 75% of work time and lift and turn patients.
- Ability to focus on patient needs and details for 75% of work time.

Responsibilities
- Evaluate, test, and treat inpatients referred for physical therapy, covering all physical therapy areas.
- Review medical records, observe and interview patients, and review medical histories, diagnoses, and orders.
- Perform and document initial evaluations, progress notes, re-evaluations, treatment responses, and other required records in a timely manner.
- Develop therapeutic plans and establish short- and long-term goals in conjunction with patients.
- Select interventions, equipment, modalities, and treatment strategies to achieve patient goals.
- Adjust plans of care in response to changes in patient status and observe treatment contraindications and precautions.
- Educate patients and families about disease processes and therapeutic interventions, adapting education to learner needs and abilities.
- Coordinate physical therapy with other services and discuss treatment plans or related problems with physicians and nursing staff.
- Participate in discharge planning, family conferences, and communication with other health care professionals.
- Practice safely, follow policies and procedures, observe safety precautions, and examine equipment before patient use.
- Determine which physical therapy tasks can be legally and ethically delegated and assist in supervising Physical Therapy Assistants and rehabilitation support staff.
- Organize workload to meet deadlines and priorities established by management.
- Provide positive, respectful, compassionate customer service; maintain patient privacy and confidentiality; and contribute to teamwork and a positive work environment.
- Participate in quality-of-service activities, performance assessment and improvement, and the development or modification of practice guidelines.
- Maintain current professional knowledge, participate in instruction and program planning, promote physical therapy, develop new projects or services, and pursue self-improvement.
- Provide lectures and demonstrations to hospital staff and affiliations as requested.
