About The Position

Horizons Greater Washington (HGW) seeks an energetic and student-centered Physical Education (PE) Teacher to inspire a lifelong appreciation for health, fitness, teamwork, and physical activity. During each Saturday Academy session, the PE Teacher will lead engaging, developmentally appropriate physical education classes for approximately 15–20 students in three age-based groups. The ideal candidate creates an inclusive environment where every student feels safe, challenged, and successful while supporting Horizons' commitment to whole-child development. The Physical Education Teacher works closely with the Site Director to ensure high-quality program implementation and supports Horizons' mission of inspiring the joy of learning, building confidence, and helping students realize their potential.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in education, physical education, recreation, youth development, or a related field.
  • Experience working with elementary and/or middle school-aged students.
  • Strong classroom management and student engagement skills.
  • Knowledge of social-emotional learning and developmentally appropriate instructional practices.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction to support diverse learners.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
  • Enthusiasm for Horizons Greater Washington's mission and commitment to educational equity.

Nice To Haves

  • Physical Education teaching certification or related credentials.
  • Experience teaching physical education in a school or youth development setting.
  • Knowledge of national or state physical education standards.
  • Experience supporting multilingual learners and students with diverse learning needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to create inclusive, engaging, and culturally responsive learning environments.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate physical education lessons that promote fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy lifestyles.
  • Foster an inclusive learning environment where all students actively participate and experience success through differentiated instruction.
  • Teach fundamental movement skills, physical fitness, cooperative games, and individual and team sports.
  • Incorporate activities that strengthen students' physical, social, and emotional development.
  • Promote positive character traits, including perseverance, responsibility, leadership, and respect.
  • Celebrate student growth and encourage goal setting and self-improvement.
  • Establish and maintain a safe, organized, and positive physical education environment.
  • Apply effective behavior management strategies aligned with Horizons' Positive Youth Development approach.
  • Ensure all activities are conducted safely and equipment is properly maintained.
  • Maintain organization and accountability for PE equipment, supplies, and program spaces.
  • Comply with all Horizons policies, safety procedures, and host school expectations.
  • Collaborate with the Site Director and fellow staff to support high-quality program implementation.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, families, and community partners as appropriate.
  • Attend required meetings and planning sessions.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by incorporating feedback and adapting instruction to meet student needs.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and actively contribute to a positive team culture.
