About The Position

This position is for a Physical Education & Health Department Head, K-12, for the 2026-2027 school year. The role involves promoting a positive physical education and health culture, collaborating on district-wide vision, and developing and implementing departmental curriculum objectives aligned with state standards. The Department Head will also facilitate professional learning, serve as a resource for the department, support student transitions, analyze data, participate in hiring processes, supervise and evaluate department members, and implement best practices for student learning. Additionally, the role includes planning and facilitating department meetings, consulting on budgets, managing supplies, communicating the instructional program to the community, developing community resources, providing input on school schedules, staying current with best practices, and collaborating on curriculum development. The Department Head may also teach up to two classes and supervise substitute teachers.

Requirements

  • Massachusetts licensure as a Supervisor/Director and/or Principal/Assistant Principal.
  • At least five years of successful teaching experience in physical education and health required.
  • Knowledge of and experience with state and national Physical Education and Health standards required.

  • Master’s Degree or higher preferred.
  • SEI teacher or administrator endorsement preferred.
  • Instructional leadership experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience Universal Design for learning (UDL) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Promote positive physical education and health culture.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Teaching & Learning in the development and implementation of a district-wide vision for learning focused on physical fitness, health, and wellness.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of departmental curriculum objectives aligned with the learning standards of the curriculum frameworks.
  • Facilitate an ongoing program of curriculum development, revision, and evaluation to ensure our curriculum is relevant, horizontally and vertically aligned, and documented in writing according to district protocols.
  • Develop, facilitate, and implement professional learning for department members.
  • Serve as a primary resource for department- and curriculum-specific questions.
  • Support school-to-school transitions and course selection, including collaboration with guidance counselors to ensure proper placement for newly enrolled students throughout the year at each school.
  • Collect, analyze, interpret, and use data to inform teaching, learning, and instructional leadership.
  • Participate in the hiring process for the discipline and assist in new educator orientation, induction, and mentoring as needed.
  • Provide leadership in the recruitment, selection, and assignment of teachers within the K - 12 department.
  • Supervise and evaluate department members using prescribed evaluation procedures.
  • Implement a variety of best practices to ensure student learning, growth, achievement, and engagement.
  • Plan and facilitate department meetings on a regularly scheduled basis as outlined in the annual district calendar and conduct post-meeting follow up as needed.
  • Consult with Principals and Director of Teaching & Learning to inform and administer department budgets.
  • Oversee, inventory, requisition, and manage supplies and materials using effective record keeping, distribution, and collection techniques.
  • Assist in communicating the district’s instructional program to families, greater community, and community partners and serve as a resource for curriculum inquiries.
  • Develop and utilize community resources for department needs.
  • Provide input to the principals/assistant principals on the development of the schedule for each school.
  • Remain current in best instructional and leadership practices through professional readings, attendance at curriculum-focused professional learning, and engagement in other professional conferences and opportunities.
  • Collaborate with instructional leaders in horizontal and vertical articulation and development of teaching and learning, including the design of interdisciplinary learning opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with the Office of Teaching & Learning for the development and implementation of K - 12 curriculum objectives.
  • Teach classes within the department; Department Heads may teach up to two (2) classes.
  • Supervise the daily work assignments of substitute teachers in the department.
  • Such other department related duties as the Principals and/or Director of Teaching & Learning may from time-to-time assign.
