Photonics Design Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

As a Photonics Design Engineer within the Camera Semiconductor Devices organization, you will explore and develop advanced photonic devices for future applications. You will lead large-scale computational modeling and machine-learning-driven design workflows, working with cross-functional teams and external vendors to move next-generation optical components from concept to production. You will manage end-to-end device simulation and evaluation, using data-driven insights to communicate engineering risks and architectural merits and support strategic decisions. The role owns development of the computational physics and simulation platform, from first-principles algorithm implementation to machine-learning-assisted design workflows. It includes implementing deep-learning surrogate models and inverse design to optimize device performance under real-world manufacturing tolerances; designing and modeling photonic devices for camera and sensing applications; and coordinating prototype development with vendors. Experimental and manufacturing data are fed back into the machine-learning pipeline to optimize high-volume production.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, physics, applied mathematics, computational sciences, or an equivalent field.
  • Experience in semiconductor and photonic device design and development, and data analysis.
  • Experience in electromagnetics modeling, inverse design, and/or machine learning.
  • Familiarity with semiconductor device physics.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Proactive attitude, aptitude to learn, and ability to resolve challenges independently.
  • Passion for taking responsibility and driving results.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, physics, applied mathematics, computational sciences, or an equivalent field.
  • At least 3 years of experience with in-depth understanding and proficiency in electromagnetics modeling, inverse design, and machine learning.

Responsibilities

  • Lead large-scale computational modeling and machine-learning-driven design workflows.
  • Manage end-to-end device simulation and evaluation, using data-driven insights to communicate engineering risks and architectural merits.
  • Own development of the computational physics and simulation platform, from first-principles algorithm implementation to machine-learning-assisted design workflows.
  • Implement deep-learning surrogate models and inverse design to optimize device performance under real-world manufacturing tolerances.
  • Design and model advanced photonic devices for high-performance camera and sensing applications.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to explore novel system solutions.
  • Partner with external vendors to coordinate prototype development.
  • Feed experimental and manufacturing data back into the machine-learning pipeline to optimize high-volume production.
