Photonics Design Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

As a Photonics Design Engineer within Apple’s Camera Semiconductor Devices organization, you will explore and develop advanced photonic devices for future applications. You will lead large-scale computational modeling and machine-learning-driven design workflows, working with cross-functional teams and external vendors to take next-generation optical components from concept to production. The role includes managing end-to-end device simulation and evaluation and communicating engineering risks and architectural merits using data-driven insights to support strategic decisions. You will own development of the computational physics and simulation platform, from implementing first-principles algorithms to building machine-learning-assisted design workflows. You will implement deep-learning surrogate models and inverse-design methods to optimize device performance for real-world manufacturing tolerances. You will also design and model photonic devices for camera and sensing applications, coordinate prototype development with external vendors, and use experimental and manufacturing data to improve the machine-learning pipeline and optimize high-volume production.
