About The Position

The Phlebotomy Technician I performs skin punctures and venipunctures on patients of all ages to obtain blood specimens for clinical laboratory analysis, under the supervision of the Laboratory Director, Manager, or Supervisor. The role also performs clerical and specimen-processing duties, supports laboratory operations, and may assist with sample pickup, supply management, and other departmental tasks as assigned.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
BLS certification within 45 days of hire and maintained as current.

Nice To Haves

At least two years of clinical laboratory experience.

Responsibilities

Perform skin punctures and venipunctures on patients of all ages to collect blood specimens for laboratory analysis.
Perform computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties.
Understand terminology associated with laboratory tests that are ordered.
Communicate effectively and use appropriate telephone etiquette when greeting patients and visitors.
Use proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment to collect specimens from newborn through geriatric patients.
Process microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens.
Process specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
Stock routine supplies and maintain cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas.
Process or load specimens onto automated laboratory instrumentation according to established policies and procedures.
May pick up samples at the hospital or operating room; assist laboratory specialties with sorting, analyzing, and storing samples; assist pathology; manage inventory and supplies; handle mail pickup or delivery, faxing, phone calls, and product deliveries.
Perform other tasks or responsibilities assigned by the department manager or director.
