About The Position

The Phlebotomy Technician I obtains blood specimens from patients of all ages using skin puncture or venipuncture for clinical laboratory analysis. The position works under the supervision of the Laboratory Director, Manager, or Supervisor. It also supports laboratory operations through specimen processing, clerical work, supply management, and maintaining clean work and storage areas. The role is full-time on the night shift at Riverview Regional Medical Center in Gadsden, Alabama.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
BLS certification within 45 days of hire and maintained as current.

Nice To Haves

At least two years of clinical laboratory experience.

Responsibilities

Perform skin punctures and venipunctures to collect blood specimens from newborn to geriatric patients.
Enter data into computer systems, file records, communicate by telephone, and perform other clerical duties.
Understand terminology for tests ordered in the laboratory.
Greet patients and visitors politely and demonstrate effective communication and telephone etiquette.
Use appropriate phlebotomy techniques and equipment.
Process microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens.
Prepare specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
Stock routine supplies and maintain the cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas.
Process or load specimens on automated laboratory instruments according to established policies and procedures.
As assigned, pick up samples at the hospital or OR; assist laboratory specialties with sorting and storing samples; assist pathology; conduct inventory; replenish and order supplies; handle mail pickup and delivery, faxing, phone calls, and product deliveries.
Perform other tasks or responsibilities assigned by the department manager or director.
