About The Position

The Phlebotomy Technician I performs skin punctures and venipunctures on patients of all ages to obtain blood specimens for clinical laboratory analysis. The position works under the supervision of the Laboratory Director, Manager, or Supervisor. It also performs clerical and specimen-processing duties, maintains supplies and work areas, and may assist with laboratory and pathology tasks.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
BLS certification within 45 days of hire and maintained as current.

Nice To Haves

One or more years of clinical laboratory experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

Perform skin punctures and venipunctures on patients of all ages to obtain specimens for laboratory analysis.
Perform computer data entry, filing, telephone communications, and other clerical duties.
Understand terminology for laboratory tests that are ordered.
Greet patients and visitors politely and demonstrate good communication skills and telephone etiquette.
Use proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment to collect specimens from newborns through geriatric patients.
Process microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens.
Process specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
Stock routine supplies and maintain cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas.
Process or load specimens onto automated laboratory instruments according to established policies and procedures.
May pick up samples at the hospital or operating room; help sort, store, or prepare samples for analysis; assist pathology; manage inventory and replenish or order supplies; handle mail pickup and delivery, faxing, phone calls, and product deliveries.
Perform other tasks or responsibilities assigned by the department manager or director.
