About The Position

The Phlebotomist Specialist is a vital member of our healthcare team, responsible for collecting blood samples from patients with precision, care, and compassion. This position requires exceptional technical skills, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to patient safety and comfort. The Phlebotomist Specialist will collect samples from patients from all ages and acuity levels, using the proper mechanics and following required collection protocols. The Phlebotomist Specialist will review and assess patient orders and will place those orders in the computer system if needed. The Phlebotomist will respond to Stat requests and is comfortable assisting with collection needs in trauma situation. The Phlebotomist Specialist must be able to assist with answering the phone, proper routing of calls, and responding to the pneumatic tube system. This information is used for the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of diseases in patients.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion of an accredited Phlebotomy Program or Pass certification exam within 90 days of being hired
  • Three years of phlebotomy experience
  • Proficient in the use of the Laboratory Information System within the first 90 days of employment
  • Must be eligible for a national certification (i.e. ASCP) in phlebotomy.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of hospital experience as a phlebotomist

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques to obtain blood samples from patients of all ages.
  • Ensure proper identification of patients and specimens, following established protocols and safety guidelines.
  • Label, process, and transport collected specimens to the laboratory for analysis.
  • Adhere to proper specimen handling procedures, maintaining the integrity and traceability of samples.
  • Interact with patients in a professional and empathetic manner, addressing their concerns, providing clear instructions, and ensuring their comfort.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment for patients and staff.
  • Perform regular maintenance and calibration of phlebotomy equipment.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions or issues promptly.
  • Accurately document patient information, specimen collection details, and other relevant data in electronic health records or other designated systems.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with all applicable privacy regulations.
  • Review and assess patient orders and place those orders in the computer system if needed.
  • Respond to Stat requests and assist with collection needs in trauma situations.
  • Assist with answering the phone, proper routing of calls, and responding to the pneumatic tube system.
