About The Position

Akicita Federal is hiring Phlebotomists to deliver essential laboratory and specimen collection services for the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System in Reno, NV. In this role, you will directly support the health and well-being of our nation's Veterans by ensuring timely, accurate blood draws and specimen processing across inpatient and outpatient settings. We are staffing both Lead and staff-level positions across multiple shifts, including early morning, day, evening, and overnight schedules.

Requirements

  • Current, valid phlebotomy certification or demonstrated qualification as a Medical Technologist/Phlebotomist
  • Proficiency in venipuncture techniques across varied patient populations, including difficult draws
  • Ability to work assigned shift schedules, which may include early morning (5:00 AM start), evening (1:30 PM–9:00 PM), or overnight (9:00 PM–5:30 AM) coverage, Monday through Friday
  • Ability to perform specimen processing and floor draws in a high-volume hospital laboratory environment
  • Strong attention to detail in specimen labeling, patient identification, and documentation
  • Ability to pass a federal background investigation and meet VA personnel vetting and credentialing requirements prior to starting work

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience working in a VA, federal, or military healthcare facility
  • Experience in both outpatient draw station and inpatient floor draw environments
  • Familiarity with VA or federal electronic health record systems (e.g., VistA/CPRS or Oracle Health)
  • Experience in a lead or senior phlebotomy role with responsibility for mentoring or coordinating other staff
  • Comfort working overnight or rotating shifts in a clinical laboratory setting

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood draws on a diverse patient population, including inpatients on hospital floors and outpatients at the draw station
  • Process, label, and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis in accordance with established protocols and quality standards
  • Lead phlebotomy operations at the draw station (Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:30 PM) as a Lead Phlebotomist, providing guidance and oversight to staff-level team members
  • Conduct specimen collection and processing in the laboratory processing area across assigned shifts (early morning, afternoon/evening, and overnight)
  • Accurately document collection activities, patient identification verification, and specimen integrity in the electronic health record
  • Coordinate with nursing staff, laboratory personnel, and other clinical teams to ensure seamless specimen transport and turnaround
  • Maintain compliance with infection control, patient safety, and HIPAA standards throughout all collection and processing activities
