Phlebotomist - Inpatient/Outpatient
About The Position
Atlantic Health CentraState Medical Center in Freehold, New Jersey is hiring a full-time inpatient phlebotomist for the night shift. The inpatient phlebotomist draws patients on hospital inpatient nursing units, the same-day surgery unit, short-stay units, and occasionally the emergency room and outpatient lab as needed. This is a fast-paced, customer-focused environment with high patient volume. The role requires working well with a team of phlebotomists and communicating effectively with teammates. Phlebotomy experience is preferred, and ASCP certification is preferred. The position may also include outpatient phlebotomy duties, including collecting blood specimens and supporting accurate patient identification, specimen labeling, and patient confidentiality. CentraState Healthcare System is a not-for-profit, community-based health system partnered with Atlantic Health System and provides comprehensive health services in central New Jersey.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Proficient computer skills for registering patients and ordering laboratory tests.
- Strong professional, organizational, and interpersonal skills to effectively relate to members of the healthcare team.
Nice To Haves
- Phlebotomy experience, particularly in an inpatient setting.
- Phlebotomy certification.
- ASCP-certified phlebotomy technician certification.
- Three years of experience as an ASCP-certified phlebotomy technician for outreach.
Responsibilities
- Collect blood specimens from patients ranging from newborns to senior citizens by venipuncture, capillary fingerstick, or heelstick.
- Obtain blood specimens according to laboratory policy and procedure while minimizing bruising.
- Label and initial tubes at the patient bedside for inpatient draws and in front of patients for outpatient draws.
- Draw routine, STAT, and ALERT specimens, including stroke and medical response specimens.
- Maintain 100% compliance with positive patient identification.
- Respond to alerts throughout the hospital campus.
- Assist in specimen processing when not on the floor or responding to alerts, including receiving specimens collected by nurses, answering phones, and stocking collection supplies.
- Use computer applications for job-related tasks.
- Practice universal precautions at all times.
- Respect patient confidentiality.
